New Old Dresser!

I had the best day! I started out by waking early to thorough clean my house, organize my kitchen and bathroom, and mop all of the floors. I know, uneventful. Then I ended up downtown at the flea market along the river and at the big fabric market that is in town today from Holland. Wow, what an amazing day for me. I not only found fabrics and trims, but I found the gem I've been looking for -- a dresser for my bedroom, and it's perfect with black hardware and legs, black shelving inside for jeans and sweaters, and a pretty little drawer at the top for my jewelry.

from the fabric market

It's an antique too, and built so, so SO well. It's heavy! So I was alone when I purchased it and somehow I managed to convince the man who spoke about 5% English to take ME and the DRESSER to my house! And he did, ha ha! So it was delivered straight to my bedroom and here it it. Delivery and dresser for 200- Euro ($270 USD) and so I'm very happy today!

dresser from the flea market

I meant to share with you a rug I found a few weeks ago at a rug store in the city center, I bought it from a nice Turkish man who has family in Istanbul where he sources his rugs. This is a vintage kilim from Turkey. :) I love it, it's wool and very nice against my floors and combined with my new dresser. Do you like? :) I sure do. My heart is so full of HAPPY today. I have wanted a dresser like this for a very, very long time. And the best thing is that I can use it in the living room or hallway if I ever wanted to move it around because it could easily store china, books, or anything else. I love that it's so flexible since I love to change things around. But, for as long as we live here in this apartment, it will remain my lovely new old dresser.

vintage kilim

p.s. that vintage mirror lights up at night... but it's hung too low and so I need to put it elsewhere. the table I had in this spot before was much lower than this dresser. I was going to take it off of the wall for this photo, but it's screwed very tightly into the wall so my husband needs to take care of this later. (images: holly becker for decor8)

Congrats on your great finds . I believe the dresser is called a meidenkast in dutch.

Marianne - Maybe, I'm not sure as I don't speak Dutch. In German it's called a vertiko.

What a fantastic find!! YAY!! I know the feeling of excitement about getting your delivery. I remember the first time I rode in a taxi alone here and I thought I was probably going to die or be lost forever, but it was thrilling to arrive home safely with not a single issue. Such is life in a new country!
The dresser is fantastic. Such clean lines. I love that it is a fresh, clean, true white! Fabulous addition to your bedroom, no doubt!
Gorgeous dresser I love it and the rug wow great finds! Have a wonderful Sunday!

I did some research and found a referral to meidenkast en vertico on one site. So I guess they are the same. If you take a look at the dutch auction site www.marktplaats.nl en search (top right side of your screen) for meidenkast you will find a collection of this kind of dressers. If you search for vertico you will find some too.

Awe, what a lovely dresser. I also love your fabric finds! Do you have a plan set out for them yet? I'd totally make quilted pillow cases out of those, or perhaps a table runner, or something like a coffee-cup sleeve for a normally-plain vase!

I hope Thorsten likes the dresser too.

We love shopping flea markets and junk stores and finding things we can re-create. There is always a great piece of furniture waiting for a new life and as you said, the workmanship is unbeatable.
Holly, love the dresser and the rug. Have you thought about hanging the mirror horizontally above the dresser? It looks like the proportions would be perfect that way.

What camera/lens do you use for such great photos...? I love your blog..total blog envy.
haus maus said…
Janet - Yes, but you see the mirror is one that lights up (there are bulbs behind the glass in front of the metal part) and the glass slides down into these slots and if it were turned on it's side it would be a problem... Plus the cord is also an issue... And of course the mirror IS VERY HEAVY and there are no hooks on the back for hanging it any other direction. So no, it would not work. :(

A very special and gorgeous find, Holly! I do believe that vintage objects can hold and reflect the atmosphere of their former environments. To bring you such a rush of happiness, this one has to have been in homes full of joy and love and good fortune. I'm really pleased you found such a lovely piece to welcome you and add to the wonderful adventure of your new home!

Could you tell me, where you bought the kelim? I might be in Hanover in a few weeks and I'm searching for a nice rug. Thank you!
