We're Moving!
Okay, the big news is... We are moving! Yes, really! Now you don't have to listen to my woes about the hard time I'm having finding a flat to rent. You no longer have to listen to my 'poor me' sermons. We are moving on October 1st and I could not be happier. I am SO ready for this. Here is what we found!
This is one room, it may become the living room or the dining room or my office, not sure. It leads out to the wintergarten. The ceilings have all of these flowers carved in rows and some beams which are original details to the home. These photos were taken very quickly so they are not the best quality, sorry for that.
Same with this room, because of the layout this could be the living room, dining or my office. It has a nice ceiling to, just a bit different from the other.
And also the same goes with this room, could be the LR, DR or my office but I think it may be either the LR or the DR. Also the floors are original to the house, they are herringbone wood. In this photo they are sanded down and raw but a clear coat of varish will go on them to match the photo in the top of this post. It has a nice ceiling too.
This is one view of the kitchen with the little pantry.
This is another view of the kitchen walking in. Those are some of the doors connecting the rooms throughout the home, two rooms have french doors (these shown) and another room has pocket doors. In this kitchen there are 3 windows and a nice view of the big yard and beyond that is the forest so you can smell it when you open the windows and hear the birds. It's nice. The other 4 rooms and the hallway I have not photographed yet as it is still being renovated but in September I will post more as I can get the keys then and start designing the kitchen - I need to put cabinetry in there and appliances! We move in October 1 so I want the kitchen to be finished so that when we move in we can start living normally from day one. I remember having no cabinets and such for many weeks in the past and I don't want to repeat that if I can avoid it.
Our new apartment is 210 sq mtr which is 2,260 square feet of living space and though built 110+ years ago, it feels very new because it was just gut renovated, we will be the first to occupy it. It's very private and in a great neighborhood called List right near the forest, train, etc. We have a small balcony, two wintergarten (I guess you'd call them "sunrooms" in the US, one is off of the dining room or living room *I haven't decided yet* and the other is off of the bedroom). Then there is a guest bedroom, 2 offices (one for me and one for my husband) and a nursery but until that time comes, we will use it as a guest bedroom. Then we have a guest bathroom and a full bathroom for us.
The guest room, bathroom and kitchen are quite small though larger than what we have currently but at least the kitchen has a little area for me to put a small table and 2 chairs because I really like the idea of having breakfast in my kitchen each morning. The kitchen gets a lot of sun in the morning in the new place, which makes me even more excited to be in there enjoying that space. I cannot eat in my kitchen now, too small, so to have a table in there will be a luxury to me!
Next there is the kitchen with two speisekammer, which are normal in old houses and I am very excited to have them because they are two little rooms off of the kitchen -- you'd call them a pantry in the states. One is for the washer/dryer and food storage and the other is for trash/recycling/hot water heater/vacuum, brooms, etc. Then there is a very open hallway where you can put a breakfast table outside of the kitchen or create a reading nook or something and then the entryway which is quite large for putting coats and such. Then a living room and dining room. So the total rooms, not including the entry and hallway though we can use them as nooks too, would be 6 so it is a 4 bedroom apartment by American standards.
We are getting a larger place since my husband and I work from home full-time and because we want to have a child and hopefully, that can all come full circle now because I'm at the point in my life where I am ready to enjoy my home, decorate again, be creative, socialize at home and enjoy my house. I stopped really "enjoying" my space a few months ago because we feel so crammed in to this 500 square foot 2 room apartment and it really was hard for me to work in the living room and for my husband to work out of our bedroom. It's not good for romance, entertaining, nothing because both are always pressed up against one another and that is never a good thing for a marriage if both are working from home full-time. Lucky for us, we don't fight and get that upset over small things, but still, the cramped life is not for us.
So, yes - we are moving and I am so happy! The landlord said I can wallpaper which made me excited because there is a pattern I've been loving for over a year now that I want to put in our bedroom. I also feel happy that we will live in the same building as our lovely friends because I will miss living in the same building as my mother-in-law as I do now, I love her so much and she is really nice to us and brings over yummy homemade things but it's okay, we have to try something new now.
We just celebrated our anniversary on July 14 and in another week, we will celebrate another anniversary, one year of living in Germany together! So in between two special dates, our apartment has arrived. This is a very special day my friends.
TODAY IS REALLY SPECIAL TO ME. I have always dreamed of having a place like this, for over 10 years now since I first saw these old buildings when I dated my husband, so today was a dream come true because parts of my life have been a bit depressing at times without parents who are that involved in me and who I am as a person -- so having a home that I really love with my dear husband, and the idea of having a baby here (hopefully if all goes right)... it makes the sad things less so. That's all.

Looking forward to seeing how you decorate the new digs (naturally).
Congratulations!
All things nice...
I hope it's ok if I share in your happiness for a moment. You deserve every good thing, and this flat is just one piece of that.
This is wonderful news, and the apartment is absolutely stunning (and HUGE) - I can't wait to see what you do with it.
Good luck to you, your new beautiful home & making a little one:)

we're finally moving into our space after being in a cramped hotel room for 4+ months. and we're also having a baby.
i'm feeling like i'm with you a bit in parallel journeys.
i CANNOT wait to see what you do with this amazing and gorgeous space - what lovely bones and high ceilings and and and...your talent will make it a home.
awesome!
congratulations!
You deserve this. Every last bit of this beautiful, open, character-filled space.
I admire your tenacity. I would have settled long ago after so many disappointing attempts to find the right place, but you persevered and ended up with something that was more than worth the wait.
I can't wait to see what you do with it.
We are moving into a new place next week in LA and I can't wait to decorate and get settled in (we have been traveling for the past year and also both work from home, so I totally feel you on the needing extra space front). ;) I'm looking forward to being inspired by what you do!

I am sure you will have all the happiness you deserve within those walls. :)

I actually read the post now, and I have to say it seemed to all work out perfectly. What an amazing space. I just know you'll have a little one in there too. I know it. ; )
my childhood visits to germany are what inspired my love for city living (currently nyc), it's neat to see great spaces there with an adult's eyes.
and i know exactly how you feel with the family thing, so an extra hooray for that!
tschüss!
sam
enjoy this sewwt moemnet of your life and keep us posted with your decorations ideas
It's absolutely beautiful, and boy oh boy I can really relate to your relief at having more space. My husband and I have been in the same boat!
Huge Congratulations!
I can't wait to see what you will do with the place. I know you will make it a warm and comfortable home.
Also happy that you're trying for a baby. You might want to start thinking about some black out curtains then. : ) Trust me. They come in handy.. hehe.
Here's to moving forward and the beautiful future ahead!
Can't wait to see how you decorate your beautiful new home! :)

This is very exciting news. Can't wait to see what you make of it.
Thanks for your sweetness and vulnerability in sharing some of your struggles. I understand where you are coming from.
Hugs,

May I kindly ask when the time comes that you also post a plan of the place and some more photos. I'm an architect so I always love looking at plans of apartments especially in other countries.
As for really cherishing where you live and a safe nest with Thorsten - I totally get you on that one. It sounds like your family don't really 'get' what you do or take a huge level of interest in your life - this is exactly what I feel with mine; I feel as though they look down on my creative aspirations in life. This was and still sometimes is hard, but when I met my wonderful chap nearly five years ago, I couldn't believe how lovely it was to feel that someone really believed in my passions and creativity. Now, we have our first proper apartment together and it's too wonderful for words.
Anyway, so happy for you both - enjoy it!

congrats
enjoy it

Glückwunsch, Holly, die Wohnung ist wunderschön!
Enjoy your happiness!!!!!!

Congratulations to you both, well deserved!
Can't wait to see what you do with it, and good luck with starting a family (as big a news as the flat if you ask me! ;)
I can't get over how lovely your new apartment is, I'm so pleased for you. I've been waiting desperately for you to get an apartment and to get THIS apartment has made me so very happy for you. I started reading your blog at a very difficult time in my life and your blog really helped me. Your delight in nature, your life your husband, what you do, has really made a difference to me. This might sound odd but I hope you know that people across the world are interested in you and your happiness, and now of course your new 110 year old apartment. I hope that you have much joy there.
I absolutely love it already, and it will be even more stunning after you move in & decorate! It will be an exciting process to follow so I'm hoping you'll share lots!!
xx
You don't know me, but I have been following your blogs for at least 2 years now. I am so happy about your big moving news! Your post just exudes hope and planning and excitement. I can't wait to see what you and your hubby come up with. Congrats!

I'm sure all here, we're just as giddily waiting with you to start decorating those gorgeous walls and rooms.
Least I am.
Excited and Happy for you :o)
Glueckwunsch zum neuen Heim!

I'm a huge fan of your blogs and followed your "odyssey" ... I'm really happy for you! This is such a gorgeous home. Love the floor, the windows, the "Stuck" (?) and Wintergarten? OMG. In fact this is the place I'm dreaming of ;)
I wish you the best and I can't wait to see these rooms decor8ed ;)
Liebe Grüße

Lovely. Best of luck.
Lovely. Best of luck.
Diana - That is so fascinating! I did not know that. This explains it all then. The living space is front to back, so the front rooms face the front of the house and all have herringbone floors, so the living room, my office, dining room and the entry way which is a room of it's own. Then the kitchen and 2 bathrooms are in the middle of the house and face the left side (the yard) along with the guest bedroom and the back of the house has two bedrooms facing the yard too. The floors from the hallway back are not herringbone - it's so interesting to know this "history" now. Thank you!!!

I'm excited to see photos once your all moved in. Your new place has so much original character and I can just imagine what it will look like when you add your own special touch.

These are happy news and for some reason this house was waiting for you. Enjoy it!

I think all the wait has been worth it, your new home is gorgeous.
It looks fabulous & I'm sure it will change your world!
I moved from Belgium to Italy just two years ago, to finaly start a normal couple's life together with the man of my life, after two tiring years on a long-distance regime, and six months of commuting... and although it is great to finaly be together, being away from home and your family really isn't all that easy.
But two months ago, we found the house of my dreams (it looks quite a lot like yours actually... a typical old European house with big light rooms, high ceilings and gorgeous fishbone wooden floors), and it dìd change the world! Life just looks different when you're in a house you adore!
So good luck!

All the best to you and your husband.

I can see your point if noth work from home. Lucky you, you haven't messed up with your husband yet ;)
All the best to you, Holly, you are a really lucky girl!

I imagine the room with the doors to the wintergarten as a living room - a sort of expandable living space for guests and children to spread out. The dining room I picture in the room with the curved wall and the (is that an alcove?), because a central table makes it easy to highlight the architecture in there, and I see your office in the third room because those two windows look like poetry to me. Of course, it all depends on the flow of the rooms, which is hard to see from here. :)
Congratulations Holly! I wish you many years of joy in your new home.
Jette/Denmark
I'm currently on maternity leave with my first child and let me tell you, it's so important to be comfortable with your home space – you spend A LOT of time there in the first months!
Good luck with all of your upcoming plans!

Keep us updated on your deco and developments of your new place.
Your new space is so pretty! It looks like it was worth the wait. Can't wait to see how you make it your own :)
We are also thinking of moving and we are not just looking for a new apartment/ house, but rather in which country bring up our growing family!! it gets slightly more complicated when 2 (very young) kids are involved in the moving :)
You apartment would kind of be my dream one too, although I would love to be on the first floor and have a big balcony/ garden/ backyard!
The high ceilings, old windows and old wooden floor - all you ever wanted! Congratulations and I am happy for you! It was worth the wait and all the trouble!
Yvonne
Your home is stunning. I can't wait to see photos of the completed space.
