Loot From The Junk Shop
We have a few "junk" shops as I like to call them here in Hannover... they are shops where grandmother's things go when grandmother dies. Sorry to be so blunt, but it is what it is. When older folks die, these companies come in (usually called in by relatives) and they take everything to these junk shops for resale. You can find lots of mid century stuff and you can always count on coming across billions of vases and dishes and very funky old furniture (and most of it is funky, funky in a bad way).
If you frequent these shops however, you will be amazed by the things you can find for cheap, cheap, cheap. For instance, these vases. The smallest was .50 and hand signed by an artist and obviously hand thrown, one of a kind, it's gorgeous. Whenever I'm in these shops I comb them and extract only things that I can imagine using and enjoying at home -- in other words, "cheap" isn't enough to make me buy something -- it needs to be nice and made well.
In the vases above, I plan to put single stems of flowers inside and arrange them in my window or perhaps on a shelf or my dresser top. I have lots of vases and things, but I rotate them so frequently as to not bore myself - so in the cupboard some vases go, others come out, then those go in and others come out, etc. I like to freshen up my home by a simple visit to the cupboard or, in this case, the local junk shop. Everything you see above was under $10.
Do you go to junk shops to scout for treasures?

These are lovely finds and I love that you rotate your little vases, such a great idea. I'm all about bud vases right now, buying a small bundle of flowers for $5-6 dollars and spreading their joy all over the house.
Lovely post, the vases are beautiful. Really organic looking.
I just wanted to ask what camera you used to take these photographs.
P.s I bought your book (Im from the UK) and I fell for it hook line and sinker!!!

Oh, and the little Matryoshka dolls and the Japanese embroidered artwork I found last month (see: http://www.frauhaselmayer.com/2011/03/thrift-store-finds.html).
My Blog
The Brocki has made our flat a home; I love treasure hunting for Swiss items that I will take back with me to the U.S. Plus awesome beer and wine glasses, vases, lovely linens and even more books!
Thanks for blogging - I take delight in your beautiful images.
Happy Easter!
Love the colors and workmanship of the handmade pottery and the whites ~yum!
I've been collecting small seafoam, blue vases. Love you're idea of switching them out.
Beautiful Post and photos.
Have a colorful Easter and have a Kinder Egg for us in the US!

I called in my favorite shop, I haven't visited them since, as I have no urge to find my mom's stuff there.
But you are right. A lot of lovely stuff can be found in those shops. Much better then the ordinary thrift stores. Your finds are lovely!
And while I am here! I have enjoyed your stories about the Liberty book signing on Decor8 very much. I haven't bought the book yet. But I will very soon.
Frohe Ostern!
I am living in Hannover, too. So...which shops do you go to? I think I've been in already most of them, but maybe you know some more! :)
what shops do you mean in Hannover?
Thanks for your answer:-)
First congratulation on your wonderful book. I simply LOVE it!
I ordered it right away and have been waiting and waiting :)
But lucky me got it right before Easter, so no Poirot or Foyle for me.
(Crime-series are a big Easter-tradition in Norway :))
I just made a sweet post about your wonderful book, hope you like it. You are such a good person showing of others, now it´s your time!
Wish you all the best,
Jeanette
Nice to see you posting again on Hausmaus. I'm sure the press windup on the new book was frenetic. As an expat in Berlin, I've really enjoyed reading your thoughts and adventures adapting to Germany right as we were too. Hope to see more of your posts on the apartment soon! We are gearing up to move next to Switzerland- time to start a whole new type of German. I'll miss the sweet little shops like the one you went too. Hopeful that Bern will have something similar too!
Have a lovely weekend.
