Loot From The Junk Shop

We have a few "junk" shops as I like to call them here in Hannover... they are shops where grandmother's things go when grandmother dies. Sorry to be so blunt, but it is what it is. When older folks die, these companies come in (usually called in by relatives) and they take everything to these junk shops for resale. You can find lots of mid century stuff and you can always count on coming across billions of vases and dishes and very funky old furniture (and most of it is funky, funky in a bad way).

If you frequent these shops however, you will be amazed by the things you can find for cheap, cheap, cheap. For instance, these vases. The smallest was .50 and hand signed by an artist and obviously hand thrown, one of a kind, it's gorgeous. Whenever I'm in these shops I comb them and extract only things that I can imagine using and enjoying at home -- in other words, "cheap" isn't enough to make me buy something -- it needs to be nice and made well.

In the vases above, I plan to put single stems of flowers inside and arrange them in my window or perhaps on a shelf or my dresser top. I have lots of vases and things, but I rotate them so frequently as to not bore myself - so in the cupboard some vases go, others come out, then those go in and others come out, etc. I like to freshen up my home by a simple visit to the cupboard or, in this case, the local junk shop. Everything you see above was under $10.

Do you go to junk shops to scout for treasures?

Lovely finds today. I have loved shopping the thrift stores since I was in college but many, particularly Goodwill have really gone up in price. I definitely should try to find some junkier junk shops - haa-haa. Actually you've inspired to me and a few are coming to mind. There's one not far from home that is definitely as you described the place where the belongings of those who have passed go to be passed on.

These are lovely finds and I love that you rotate your little vases, such a great idea. I'm all about bud vases right now, buying a small bundle of flowers for $5-6 dollars and spreading their joy all over the house.

Oh, yes, I love going to the junk store. I try to visit my favorite one at least once a month to look for pretty plates, vintage vases, old kitchen stuff and other cute knick-knacks. My best found was a box with 14 vintage Mason Jars for 5 €... I'm pretty sure everyone living in the US is laughing at me but Mason Jars are so hard to find in Germany. The best thing about the Mason Jars was that I found a teeny tiny slip of paper in the box with the name and the address of the previous owners. Obviously Germans who once lived in Skokie, Illinois. I love the thought that something simple as some canning jars served already so many years and found all their way from Illinois to me...

Oh, and the little Matryoshka dolls and the Japanese embroidered artwork I found last month (see: http://www.frauhaselmayer.com/2011/03/thrift-store-finds.html).
I've got a few vases and pitcher from my grandmother that I love to use. My collection is small but I love every piece. I do love to thrift.

I love going to the Brocki here in Zurich. My husband is working here for several years, and I came with only a few personal items (books, dvds, cds, a few family photos, my favorite mug, and of course clothing).

The Brocki has made our flat a home; I love treasure hunting for Swiss items that I will take back with me to the U.S. Plus awesome beer and wine glasses, vases, lovely linens and even more books!

Thanks for blogging - I take delight in your beautiful images.

Happy Easter!

Love to go to thrift shops. I'm always drawn to the housewares and pillowcases. First place I look.

I love it! The junk shops in our town are carefully curated to only offer the best selection of German 90's plus size clothing, middle eastern water pipes and tattered children's shoes. Clearly I need to make a trip to a larger city, lol!

Unfortunately we had to call in one of those shops when my mother passed away last year. You can't take home everything, even if you want to.
I called in my favorite shop, I haven't visited them since, as I have no urge to find my mom's stuff there.
But you are right. A lot of lovely stuff can be found in those shops. Much better then the ordinary thrift stores. Your finds are lovely!
And while I am here! I have enjoyed your stories about the Liberty book signing on Decor8 very much. I haven't bought the book yet. But I will very soon.

Beautiful vases! I get very excited about poking around junk shops... I love finding treasures! My favorite kinds of finds are vintage serving ware, and lovely feminine tea cups, and nicely shaped bowls. For a while I was collecting "shabby chic" plates and bowls, but lately I've been into silver or silver-plate silverware. Also love old books, old scrap books, etc. Can't wait to hit up some shops in NYC..... soon.....

Some of the german pottery is quite collectible...you should read up on the valuable ones, and keep your eyes peeled.

Hey Holly! So nice to see that you are also finding some treasures in these stores! Most of the furniture in my flat either come from these stores or I found them on the street.. :) I don't really have a problem with their background - why should one? It's just used a piece that somebody else has already used. Otherwise it would be thrown away, which would be very sad - something that seems worthless for one person is a huge treasure for another one! Sometimes all they need is a small (or bigger.. :)) makeover, but finally there is an individual piece with it's own history!
I am living in Hannover, too. So...which shops do you go to? I think I've been in already most of them, but maybe you know some more! :)

Dear Holly,
what shops do you mean in Hannover?
Thanks for your answer:-)

These are so pretty, this is exactly the sort of shop I LOVE to take my time in. You have to be discerning, but so much fun.

what fun and lovely finds. I love to go to Fairkauf and the Oxfam shops, but I'd love to know if there are others. I was just feeling the itch to go on a thrifting junket-----just need to get rid of some stuff first :)

Dear Holly,

First congratulation on your wonderful book. I simply LOVE it!

I ordered it right away and have been waiting and waiting :)
But lucky me got it right before Easter, so no Poirot or Foyle for me.
(Crime-series are a big Easter-tradition in Norway :))

I just made a sweet post about your wonderful book, hope you like it. You are such a good person showing of others, now it´s your time!

Wish you all the best,
Jeanette

This is a favourite activity of mine during the Spring/Summer! (Winter just makes me far to lazy and I'm not as determined to hunt)
Of course, there I find many beautiful things and so cheap and affordable, I could buy the whole shop if I could carry all the stuff. I like all the vintage things, that give an air of retro style. You can say I'm an old fashion lady :P

Hi Holly,
Nice to see you posting again on Hausmaus. I'm sure the press windup on the new book was frenetic. As an expat in Berlin, I've really enjoyed reading your thoughts and adventures adapting to Germany right as we were too. Hope to see more of your posts on the apartment soon! We are gearing up to move next to Switzerland- time to start a whole new type of German. I'll miss the sweet little shops like the one you went too. Hopeful that Bern will have something similar too!

I don't know what you mean by the word "junk"? my dad in law and I just built a brick grill next to the herb garden with our farmhouse 140 year OLD bricks. They've sat carrying dust...until one day... imperfection is beauty to me...the money value or visual value. my dad in law has 4 houses (island beach house, lake house, farm house, mercedes camper bus) and he still goes to the dump to find things to play with and invent with. money doesn't grow on trees =) all the best, lis
ooh what great finds and I love the colors and shapes!

Oooh, what lovely vases in such a gorgeous array of colours (the little white relief patterned one is my favourite). I live near a seaside suburb that's mainly populated with retirees so there are a few junk shops selling things that once belonged to well, someone who has passed on. I have found everything from two sturdy wingbacks, beautiful cut glass decanters, the prettiest gravy boat and my favourite - wartime postcards with sentimental messages on them. I love how the little knick knacks that catch my eye and sometimes make it home are given an opportunity to be loved by someone all over again.
