Kitchen In The Morning

It was so nice to wake up to this, vs. a table in the middle of the room, this morning! I love the sunlight this room gets and I can't wait to make some breakfast now and begin my day eating at my little table near the window. I wanted to show you the wall that I spoke about that had weird corners, it's this one... there are two walls sticking out into the room which made it tricky to install cabinetry there so I decided to buy a tall, slim, wood bookcase -- it's not vintage, it is a reproduction piece made to look a bit older, but it works there. Though, sadly, I intended for it to hold some pretty bits and my cookbooks, but the shelves are not adjustable and too short to hold the books so I will stack a few and use the rest for display and such.

Morning Photos

The way you see it now, well, that was done at midnight last night as I quickly unpacked a box of things to just fill it to show you how it might look eventually.

The table near the window may or may not stay, but for now it will stay until I find what I see there in my mind's eye (a wood table, vintage, painted a gorgeous gray) but that could take awhile so for now my vintage table from the Netherlands (via ComingHome in Lindener Marktplatz) will stay. It's a nice breakie table.

Now I'm thinking of ways to make the kitchen look a bit more vintage, I want to bring in some elements now to give it character and age. I have some ideas, so I'll show you as I put them into play. :)

Ideas to bring vintage charm:

* an old cabinet, weathered, with glass doors to hang to the right of where the hood will be (or perhaps to the left, we'll see)
* open shelving that looks or is old on the other side of the hood
* a hood that matches the stove (not white, I'm unsure of how that would look) but that is brushed metal - not shiny.
* Putting things on the bookshelf that have some age and character and unifying the colors (the teas will go into the glass cabinet as I want that to be a tea cabinet since we are big tea drinkers around here and have all the accessories that goes along with being serious tea consumers).
* Find a vintage looking toaster and blender.
* Add some art, I'd love an oil painting (a portrait or animal or something against a black background -- in a vintage frame that is about 5 x 7.)
* Buy something vintage to put in the windows -- a cafe curtain -- I'm battling between old, soft lace and Belgium linen that I can embellish somehow. But only cafe curtains, nothing on top.
* Do something to the walls - wallpaper or paint perhaps...
* Bring in black accents.
* Find a vintage pendant or hang a black one, I have a few in mind...
* Introduce warmth a through rug, perhaps in stripes or something old and vintage with a pattern on it...
* I have to do a moodboard!!!

Morning Photos

The countertops look a bit orange-y but they are not AT ALL, they are very light wood with no orange tone to them but my battery was ready to die and I had no time to adjust my settings, hence the glowing counters.

Hope you have a nice weekend! I'm going to see my friend play acoustic guitar this afternoon in Linden, it will be great to hear him play live - he is a musician who tours and is from Philadelphia living in the List near me with his wife and children.

Oh back to the kitchen... Remember, this was before:

The bookcase is now where that ladder is.... See the walls - that is what I meant about tricky configuration for cabinetry!

P.S. I hear my husband doing things in the kitchen, tinkering around, and I love that sound. He is really into arranging things and organizing stuff so I am always so excited when he takes an interest in our home and the new things that we bring in. I have to give him a shout out for carrying that shelf home from Esplanade (a store in List) home on Friday night.

What a sweetie.

We don't have a car here, we vowed to live car-free for a year but now we're here 15 months and still don't want a car so we're going to do it for another year. This means being clever, and for him it means buying furniture, throwing it over his shoulder and walking home with it.

This "extra' walls are used to conceal pipes and cables etc. I have them in one room. We would like to convert that room into a bathroom.
Your kitchen already looks nice.
Have a nice Sunday.

It's already looking great! We have also done the carry-it-home from the thrift store thing here in Amsterdam (we snagged a cute dresser that I fixed up)

For an awesome yet vintage-y looking blender, I recommend Osterizer. They have a sort of beehive base one based on a vintage model. It's pretty to look at, though I actually bought it because it's got a glass jar and all-metal gears (on many blenders the bits that grip the jar to the base are plastic and I went through a couple blenders with those breaking before I got fed up and bought the Osterizer). The only downside is it's super loud but who runs a blender for very long anyway?

I cannot wait to see it all come together for you holly! I love vintage and I look forward to seeing you bring vintage into your kitchen space.

I love your little table! What a cute spot to have your breakfast.

Oh the moodboard! Love it.

Oh, it's kusmied up for sure! I never knew that Esplanade sold furniture, isn't this store all about little cute thingies?

Definitely coming together. I especially like the idea of the "tea cupboard", with all those gorgeous Kusmi jars and teapots.

Curious- what happened to the lovely vintage cabinet in your old kitchen? It went so well with your units and countertops (which were a darker wood, if I remember right) there. Is it elsewhere in the new flat, or did you leave it for Thorsten's brother?

@Frau Mayer - Some of the pieces of furniture that they use for display are for sale. Also, they sell the complete line of furniture from House Doctor and other collections, you can ask them to see the catalog, and they can order pieces for you though they won't deliver and the items arrive to their shop so you have to retrieve them there. My bookcase is not a brand though, from what I can tell, I have no clue where they got it but it was a bit expensive at 230, Euros I think...

@Ele - Yes I know, I imagine this vintage glass cabinet for all of my tea tins and such, I have so many not shown that are still packed. Yes, that large cabinet is now outside of the kitchen in the hallway. Sadly, it would not fit in this kitchen but it's okay because it's still close by so I can use it to store things for the kitchen plus it looks fine in the hallway since that hallway isn't our main entryway, it's the one that leads to the back bedrooms and my husband's office and the two bathrooms.
Sieht schon toll aus! Ich bin gespannt auf mehr! Greetings from Cologne! Ricarda

Love the simplicity of the cupboard. Looking forward to seeing you make your magic!

Holly, it's already looking fantastic and I can't wait to see it when you've added all your vintage touches. I love all your suggestions, especially the idea of open shelves and adding some smaller vintage pieces on display. We are at a similar stage with our kitchen - small, homely touches are now needed to add character and personality.

Oh, good to know, Holly, thanks. By the way, I've recently become a huge Nordal fan - they have some amazing pieces in their current catalogue! Couldn't resist puchasing a living room cabinet :)

This is for sure the best part of moving :-))
I could hardly wait (moved many times in last years) to have some storage/display unit after moving in and started using it in some wierd night hours if this was the time the peace was ready to use

Yeah color I knew it was coming and that little table and stool.
Just love it.

Looking good! I know what you mean about bringing in some pattern to vintage it up a little. I'm working on a collage thing for the wall by our kitchen eating area as well as some pillows for our bench. It's taking a while to get it 'right' though!

Maybe some vintage tea towels or handkerchiefs for the cafe curtains?

I'm sure it's just a camera angle thing, but your kitchen actually looks bigger with all the stuff in it than it does in the before photos.

Forgot to mention how much I like your big range. You can cook up a storm with that thing...

I agree 100% that it *is* exciting when the man gets into getting a home into shape. I always get way more jazzed about fixing up the apartment when my boyfriend is jazzed too.

I have to chime in and tell you how much I love your kitchen. The combination of sleek white with those wood countertops is just perfect! I've been thinking about wood counters for awhile now (I'm growing tired of my dark granite...) and I love seeing how fabulous yours look. Looking forward to seeing more of how your new place is evolving! :)

Your kitchen looks beautiful! I love the contrast of the shiny white cabinetry and the wood counter tops. Really lovely--can't wait to see more!

I know this kitchen will be very charming after you did your magic :) It looks lovely already, so I can't wait to see more.

We are renting at the time, and I hate the fact that I can't do anything with it (It's so dark and boring, with no personalty. I'm really looking forward to have my own kitchen some day soon, so I can have it white and fresh like yours.

I notice that you have a lot of the Kusmi tea - they are so decorative!:)

Oh, and thank you so much for your ideas on how to bring vintage charm!

es sieht jetzt schon vielversprechend aus! bin gespannt auf mehr! liebe grüße, éva
Wow it's looking lovely! Very stylish already and you haven't everything completed yet. The worktop counters are lovely in wood, I would love them but they are hard kept so I may just put wood on the island. Hope your having a nice weekend

All things nice...

A perfect kitchen - just what I would expect! Love that professional looking stove and, of course, the fact that you also seem to be a big Kusmi tea fan. I go to their store here in Paris all the time.
Some more kitchen tips: If you decide to paint the kitchen, I would recommend painting it (or at least the wall behind the stove) with washable paint. We have that in our kitchen and it is such a blessing if you accidentally splash something (like tomato sauce...) against the walls; just a wet cloth and the stain is gone without damaging your wall. A great vintage looking blender is the KitchenAid one. I bought one; it is strong and comes in various colors. A lovely - though expensive - toaster is the one from Dualit, also available in different colors (love the pink or aqua one!). And finally: have you considered an old plate rack for your cooking books (like in this post: http://lillelykke.blogspot.com/2010/06/bordenrek-een-keer-anders.html)?

Hey Holly,

What a great kitchen! Can I ask if the kitchen dresser is also IKEA? We are planning our new kitchen and I would love to have that exact same kitchen dresser...

Thnks!

Oh, it's coming along so nice! I think I may have the same cabinets and countertops, but the land lord put a dark finish on our countertops. The light is so pretty in your kitchen! Did you get your refrigerator yet? I thought you mentioned that you were getting the smeg? I told my husband that if we EVER have to buy a refrigerator again that I HAVE to have one!

I'm so excited to see what you add to your kitchen because I have been facing that same dilemma. I added some vintage artwork, accessories and cookbooks, but I tried to keep some modern elements as well so it would look pulled together.

anyways! I'm rambling. I'll have to post some photos soon! Hugs!
I'm really excited to see how this turns out! Just a bit of tip: I have those countertops and they are prone to water damage around the sink. I learned this a little too late, but I still love them overall.

I love the table by the window! So much potential here!

is that a cookie holder with the rooster lid? (I like it)

Love the white crisp paint! What color is it? Do you have a favorite white paint you generally use?

I agree with Allison about the Osterizer blender. I have a vintage one that was my grandmother's and it still works great. If the quality & workmanship is still the same, you'll have it for a lifetime.

Kim

p.s. I am glad you still have the cabinet that used to be in your apartment kitchen. I really liked it a lot.

@Croatian_Latina - The gray cookie jar is ceramic and it's by Jonathan Adler and is gray with a bird on top (not a rooster).

@Lisa - Sorry I don't know, guys just came in with white paint and did the walls. :) But generally I love Decorators White by Benjamin Moore, though we can't get that here in Germany but there are tons of gorgeous pure whites here so we don't need it and Flamant in Hamburg makes amazing paints.

@Anonymous - I really want to steer clear of a loud blender, but thank you anyway!!!! :)

Keep posting about that lovely flat of yours -- it's great to watch a space grow. Some magazine homes are intimidating in their finished-ness...
I am so curious to see your new apartment completly finished...
Have a nice "Adventszeit"

Hi Holly,
I follow decor8 and am loving to see your new home come together here. We moved to North Rhine region from the states a year and a half ago. A tip for those tile floors: white nail polish works wonders for disguising chips. French manicure polish is the best because of the small brush.
