{tales from the crib}

no, i'm not pregnant. with a post title like that you may have wondered... no kids for me yet. but i do have tales from the crib, my crib, to share with you today. first let me show my latest purchase from a shop one block from my apartment that JUST opened today called Lillehus (located at De Haën Platz 10 in Hannover List). If you live in or around Hannover please visit this shop (and let me know you're in town and we can meet for tea!) because it's so darling... Lots of goodies from Germany and Denmark. This is my new light... (background story on my light here.) Now for a little progress report. My 2nd IKEA shelf is up and over the sofa. I'm pleased with it and though I did not style this shelf and basically just tossed things on it... I still want to share how it looks with you. I like how it came out, shelf below mirror, nice combo I think. I was glad when I measured the mirror and the two shelves and saw that they were nearly the same width. I love when that happens. The mirror is so well placed in the room, I like how it reflects both the art on the opposite wall, the view from the windows, and the large paper lantern hanging from the ceiling. I planned this so it's nice to see it in place and looking as I'd imagined it would look. Sometimes I screw up and misjudge things, but this time I didn't royally mess up so this is good. Very good. Looks so relaxing! A great place to spend time in!
I love how fresh, airy and light it is. It feels so inviting, I just want to kick off my shoes and stay awhile. :) I can't wait until we finally make it for a visit to Germany.

I am so in love with the mirror above the couch. Especially when it reflects all those fantastic pines that you are surrounded by!

Oh I'm so glad you put up a second shelf! Before, when it was just one I was kind of like, umm, I guess, and I was hoping it'd go all the way across. Yay! SO pretty, I love it.
The shelf below the mirror is so simple and yet so effective! With every photo you post your apartment is looking more and more like a home. Thanks for sharing the journey with us.

alicia - ha ha that's funny. I wanted to put up the 2nd shelf but my husband's power tool ran out of batteries so we had to wait a day before they were charged again. Then the 2nd shelf went up.

I followed you over here from
decor8 but I haven't commented here yet. I just wanted to say that I love visiting this site to see the pictures of your European home coming together - it's just gorgeous and you've totally inspired me in terms of some changes I'm making around our house here. Thanks! :)
I'm fawning over your place more and more every day. I have always dreamed of a life lived part time in another part of the world... it is still my dream and still a long term goal of mine.

In the interim, it's SO fantastic being able to live vicariously through you. And now, I totally want to visit Hannover! You really bring the city to life with your descriptions and how you've embraced your German home... love that!!

Hugs!

I like the fresh and airy look. You are so lucky! Here in India, we have so much dust to contend with, that white is just a dream.
BTW, aren't the shelves a little low? People may bang their heads sitting down, and any arm waving would topple all the art.

Your place is really starting to take shape. It looks so cozy! I love it all, though white would not be good for me!!!! It would end up all stained and dirty within days. ;-)

hi, i love the idea of the shelf, i have been thinking of doing the same at my house, but i have a question:
I only have one sofa at home, and it is used for everything, tv watching, socializing zone, "apetizer", etc. so people need to feel totally confortable there. do you think the shelf makes the relaxing position impossible?

Holly, when you sit there can you touch the shelf with the back of your head? How did you do it so that doesn't happen? I was considering something like this for my own home.

The shelf is actually a slim picture ledge, only a few inches deep. I measured everything before I installed them to ensure that they would not be in the way when seated.

This space looks lovely. So bright and airy. A great place to relax, read etc.. Your apartment is really coming along. I am in awe of how quickly you have made it your own. We have been in our new home for over a year now and it still not quite there.

Oh and I love those IKEA Stripa shelves they are a fave of mine.I have a some in my little craft room just waiting for some art!
My husband and I are going back to the US in time for Christmas. I think every present I shall ask for will be an etsy or other indie print so I can bring them back to our apartment in Berlin. Then DaWanda, too... You've made your home look so beautiful with all these touches, and it's been a great inspiration for us to keep going. Thank you Holly!

I love the way you arranged your frames!!! So exciting to see my dancing girls in that wonderful arrangement!! You're so talented Holly.
Hi Holly! I read decor8 every day and I am enjoying this blog as well. It makes me dream of my future little cottage in the French countryside (definitely a few years out, but someday....)

I love that your husband lets you put so much pretty, girly decor in your place. This is a lot like what my house would look like if I had free reign- but I swear my husband fights me on every bit of it, so we have a mix of girly (lavender walls- yay!) and masculine (a large chocolate leather sectional). It works well I think and we are both happy so I suppose it is a good comprimise.

Anywho, I love it!!

Hi Holly
Love your taste so much I want to copy the mirror and shelf above sofa look!
Is the shelf the LACK one, 5cm thick? I looks thinner on your pic. Also, how wide is the frame of the mirror please? The proportion look perfect!
Do you mind emailing me the answer pls? Thanks so much
