Junk Shop Find

I talked about this lovely solid wood mid century lamp on decor8 yesterday, did you see that? If not, here is the post and here is the lamp below. But I have a bonus. Today I'd like to share where I put my €25 lamp...

This is a great spot for now... At least while I get my home together and decorated. I'm still ordering furniture and working on it, one day at a time!

I just love junk shops in Germany. You can find the BEST stuff for so cheap -- people just don't know what they have here so it's like a goldmine though you do need a good eye and to be either alone because you really need time to sort through everything and concentrate on searching for treasures OR you need to be with a creative friend who can guide you or give you good energy that makes you even more creative. I love being around people like that.

I often thought about taking readers of my blog shopping here for treasures, you know like little shopping trips where I get a small group of 5 together, take them shopping to my favorite junk shops, teach them how to "see" things, what to look for, how to negotiate on prices, and of course, go for a yummy lunch, shop some more, then hit a favorite cafe for afternoon "coffee and cake" time which is so traditional in Germany 4:00 p.m. each day. This sounds like a fun adventure, maybe I'll find time to do it one of these days... What do you think?

I love your lamp find and am in total agreement. German second hand shops are the greatest.
I am a proud regular at the local "brauchbar!"
Best wishes from Ochsenfurt, tj

Can you recommend some junk shops in Hannover? Any favourites?

Great lamp, rustic but delicate at the same time. I like the shopping trip idea very much! Thinking a little bigger, how about making it a shopping week: Sania in London, Pia Jane in Amsterdam and you in Hanover. Would take quite some planning but there's absolutely a market for it. Could do it through Angela Ritchie -she already has the resources in place to make it happen. Just a thought.

I adore that lamp. I love the oversized shade. It just works.

I'd be very happy to read any blog posts about treasure hunting in German junk shops. It sounds like a fab idea! While some people definitely have an eye for zeroing in on great, cheap items, it would be neat to get an idea of how to develop that skill. I like thrift shops but find them a little overwhelming because there is usually just so much crap to sift through.

I love the lamp! And how nice is it that it has a cute shade that didn't need to go directly into the trash? I am addicted to thrift store lamps and have found many very cool ones at my local junk shops. That's so true that you have to shop by yourself or with others who get excited about finding treasures. I tried to go thrifting with my younger sister once and ended up leaving because she was complaining about being bored. I'll never make that mistake again!

That sounds like fun!

A junk shop shopping trip with you?! That would be a blast. I haven't done any thrifting since I have been back in Germany. Really miss the stoop/yard sales.

Ohhhhh, I would LOVE to go shopping with you!!! Great idea!! I've been to several fleamarktes recently but never seem to find the right things or if I do, they are rather expensive.

I am in! Let me know when and where and I'll be coming to Hannover for that treat. It's only a 1,5 hr. train ride from Berlin.

Love your lamp. I found curtains in my in-laws basement with a similar print like the one on your lampshade. Maybe i'll make some pillows or roller shades out of them.

Waving to Hannover,
Imke

Beautiful lamp! I struggle finding nice things like this here in Bonn. I'd gladly go shopping.

Goodness knows I need all the help developing an eye for thrift shopping, so I'm definitely a fan of your shopping tour proposal. That is a very cute lamp you got, it works so well with your other pieces!

I'm always looking for an excuse to visit Germany, so feel free to tempt me with a fabulous shopping experience.

On another note, pleeeaaase don't paint the base of this lamp! The wood is perfection (and I'm usually not an anti-painting advocate).

I think your thrift-shopping trips sounds like a blast! If I lived in Germany, I would totally take advantage of them.

Very beautiful lamp! I never find such things. Perhaps I have no eye for it. A shopping-tour in Hanover? Sounds great! I like Fairkauf for example. A few years ago there was a depot full of furniture, lamps, chairs and lots of other stuff in Sehnde (it's near Hanover). Unfortunately they closed down. It was run by a Scot.

Count me in! Totally!

Love the lamp but LOVE the shopping tour idea even more. I have plenty of friends but the only friends into creativity or decor are online. So if you combined your fav stores with other readers that would be a fantastic experience!

Love the lamp, great find! How come I never find things like that? :)

Strangely, I have found that seeing other people's thrift store finds is almost as good as my own thrift finds. Even better when they show where the items end up in their home. I loved this lamp from the minute I saw it on Decor8. A beautiful shade and the wood tones are so pretty.
OMG, love the lamp.... especially the wooden part!

What a great find! Such a beautiful lamp & it looks beautiful in your home.

It would be such a dream to go second-hand shopping with you. I am sure people would love to sign up for that!
I live in Canada, but I'm from Holland and when planning a trip to visit my family, I might add some extra travel to Hanover in the future if that was something you offered!

That lamp is gorgeous! I also love its shade. It looks perfect in your home.

Would that be combined with a city trip to Hamburg or Berlin? I'd defintely be in for the thrift tour, funnily enough I am the only one enjoying flea markets in my circle of friends. And if the shopping wasn't enough, I'd be there for cake and coffee alone.

Great lamp and I would definitely join your Hanover shopping tour! I'd love to go to junk shops here but I don't really know where they are... do you have any good addresses to share? :)

Great lamp! I especially like the way you photographed it -- from a wide shot of the lamp in its context, to a close-up of the shade. Inspiring!
