{it's the little things...}

Little things mean a lot. At least to me, I'm big on details. Everything I buy, right down to a bottle of soda needs to be pretty. I've been like this my entire life. The only thing I don't think about is food packaging, like my cheese doesn't have to come in a pretty package. But once it is home, it is quickly transferred to a pretty pastel blue Tupperware container. Most cereal boxes annoy me, they are so ugly, so I transfer cereal into a pretty glass container so that I can enjoy the display of puffed yellow circles or earthy granolas. Recently I went shopping for a rolodex, you know a card file in which I can keep all of my contacts. I'm not one to rely on my computer for contact information, I don't like it for some reason and being as tactile of a person that I am, I sometimes resent the computer because so many things I once enjoyed touching are now digital and so I can go a full day sometimes without touching a single sheet of paper. This bothers me. That is why I buy notebooks and paper goods and REAL address files vs. the Address Book on my Mac. This is my latest purchase, from an Etsy shop in Scotland called Margaret & Walter. This talented lady makes gorgeous wood address organizers for $50 and they come with all the filler papers you see here, each different and oh so pretty. I love my new purchase because it is warm, practical, stylish, and it's not something that I can only access with a mouse or keyboard. I really love the chunky wood base, it's not plastic like those you find in the store. Best part, the shop owner writes a lovely little note to thank you for your purchase. Target has never once done that. I will gladly pay $50 for something made so well that feels special. Are you also obsessed with pretty mundane things too? Please tell me what little things you take note of... (photographs by holly becker for haus maus)

I am doing the same thing. I do the same stuff with cereals, pasta, rice, almost everything needs to go in its container while home after shopping. I kind of person that doesn't like labels (those sticky black and white labels) and I unstuck them right away. This thing bothers my boyfriend who keeps remind me that in case something needs to be returned, definitely I will need those labels :).
But very often I can find myself keeping nice, beautiful labels either, or cutting some pieces of chocolate envelope as bookmarks.
So, we are quite complicated :)

Oh strange, I thought that was one of the card files by Sharilyn of Lovely Design. She's been doing those for years with found papers for the index cards - I know it's at least since before her daughter was born, and her daughter is 2. These look almost identical. I wonder how long this shop's been doing them, and if they were 'inspired' by Sharilyn.

I'm a pretty-thing girl too. I recovered a cereal box with brown paper and an image from an old calendar once and now I just put new cereal bags into the old box. I also transfer my dish soap into an old fashioned lemonade bottle that I added a pour spout to. I covered the phone book that I use as a monitor stand in some pretty wrapping paper. And I recently made a little drawstring bag out of scrap fabric so that I had a prettier place to store my scraps.

Basically, anything that I see "out" I want to be pretty and I highly dislike seeing a lot of labels/logos/advertising in my house. Anything like that goes in a cupboard.

hi holly! i'm a new reader (and blogger). i stumbled upon your blog tonight, and i know just what you mean about these kind of little details. when i was little, my mom taught me how to scrub off ugly stickers on glass bottles so that we wouldn't have to look at them. i've followed in her footsteps ever since. thanks for the post!

oh you are right. not so many things come with personal touch nowadays. i hate plastic, not only because leaches chemicals, but because it is everywhere, in our food, clothes, cosmetic, furniture, accessories -everywhere. i also miss touching paper i writing, at one point i collected so many notebooks, papers, envelopes and yet i did not use them at all, that is sad. we are overwhelmed with products in our lives hm...
greetings from australia :-)

oh thank you!
I have been looking for something like this forever!!
I too need to be tactile with my resources. I don't use my mac address book except for email addresses.

this one is lovely and perfect! no plastic.
thank you again for sharing your terrific find.

Lovely organizer! I hate getting 'virtual' birthday cards, I prefer a real card...

This is such a great idea! I wish I did this because I think making things more pretty in your life makes a difference to your mood and your spirit. I am also finding that the more I surround myself with creative things, the more creative and inspired I am.

I agree with Rebecca. When I first saw the address file, I thought it was Sharilyn's. Sure does look like someone was 'inspired.'

That address file is really nice. I guess I never thought of covering cereal boxes etc, so they must not bother me.

Here's a tip for keeping your cheese - wrap it in freezer paper. You could always draw flowers on it. ;-o

Those are just like the old index card holders in libraries when I was a child. The lovely drawers just the right side to accomodate the cards kept in place on the wooden dowels!

first off, that is a fantastic rolodex and love the librarian analogy, you are so right!!

yes yes yes i'm so into the little things.. for example, i have an eye for take away paper coffee cups, the coffee is so much better if the paper cup is somehow unique or pleasing to the eye.... i have an italian friend in paris who is crazy about the aesthetic appeal of jello boxes, she says they are so american, when i moved back to the states i left her with some of the 'little boxes' as she calls them, and she was beyond thrilled, since then i've been adding to her collection and she displays them in her stylish kitchen as though they were works of art. and i love her for it.

Looks nice. It's very similar to the one I bought from Sharilyn last year.
