{kilim obsessed}

i'm completely obsessed with kilim rugs, particularly Turkish ones but any gorgeous antique kilim will do. i am smitten by these things and cannot stop thinking about owning one... this has been going on for over a year now but in the states my home has berber carpeting so owning an area rug just was not an option. but now... oh yes things have changed. i need rugs and can justify the expense. so this is my dream rug, my magic carpet... but it is sold (it's antique so one-of-a-kind)... so boo hoo. it would have looked lovely beneath my dining room table. i am looking to warm up the space with pattern and color. this is the layering part of decorating that i love. pattern, color, layer layer layer! of course these are all wonderful too -- and they are currently available online. and they ship to germany... oooooh. but i still want to go see the Persian man in Hannover. i meant to do this yesterday but time escaped me. i will go see him saturday. perhaps he will have my dream rug and i can carry it home same day. we'll see. but for now i'm dreaming of owning my very own magic carpet. :) (images from rugstore.org)

Holly these rugs are gorgeous!! The hubby and I just picked up a kilim-style rug at IKEA (since a real one is outside of our budget at the moment). We love it! You can see a pic here if you want:

I hope you find the perfect one for you!

how does kilim differ from other rugs? Is it the technique or the color combinations?

I'd bet there are some great options for these rugs in germany since there are so many Turks living there. Or maybe you and your husband can take a trip to Turkey before you come back to the states!!! That would be fun.

Anyway, I really, really enjoyed your previous post. I'm just leaving that comment here instead of there.

Buying a rug is not a one-day activity. You go and see the rugs, and maybe have tea with the carpet merchant, and then come back and see them again and repeat a few times before you start haggling over price and pick one out. Of course, instant gratification is nice too, but it will cost you. :)

I agree with ann, come to Turkey to buy one :) Ann, I am not sure about the difference but I know that kilims are handmade from wool, I guess there are also some differences with the dying technique. They are very expensive and are a big commitment, we have plenty of valuable kilims but are so sick of them that they are all rolled behind some doors and we have no idea what to do with them.

I wonder was your thirst for the perfect rug quenched? Its a sad state of affairs for some us that must suffer daily from the addiction to beautiful textiles...

My fiancée surprised me with our first antique Kilim last night. I've had my eye on this particular one for over a month now and he had it all set up. I'm sooooooo excited! They are truly timeless.
