{bathroom plans}

so yesterday i was looking at my list thinking of additional immediate needs that thorsten and i will have the moment we touch ground over there. besides a long hot bath, of course. but with a bath comes the need for towels and while i could quickly snap up a few around the corner at strauss innovation or pack a few in my luggage, i went ahead yesterday morning and purchased the towels that i really want from my friend danielle in the netherlands. i've been dying for turkish towels with fringe, the kind that are thick and plush with an embossed geometric pattern, pure white. i started searching again online last week for some and noticed zara home no longer stocks them. i purchased 2 in every size of these juicy white beauties. i believe in spending more money than normal on only a few things in my life and towels are on this very short list of mine. i want my bathroom to be a cozy retreat, a spa-like space with only a touch of pattern here and there. lots of texture. along with the towels, i also ordered a hamman bowl for soaps.
The bowl will be placed on a wood stool for placing near the tub.
i plan to repeat the metal accent of the bowl with a metal mirror for over the sink.
For lighting, i'd love a pendant light like this one (though i'm not sure if it will rust so perhaps not). i like repeating a pattern, color, or texture in 3 places - bottom, middle, top. so in this case, the metal bowl on the bottom, the metal mirror in the middle, and the metal lamp at the top. like a painting, i like to stand back and let me eye travel the room from point to point. i'm also considering this white wood pendant too, or a simple orb from ikea or a large rice paper globe. i thought about a black chandelier but that idea is still processing. i want to finalize overhead lighting before i arrive, but the wall mounted light near the sink won't be decided on until i am over there because i need to figure out dimensions and wattage and how much room i have for a new mirror since i'm replacing the current circular one. for accessories i want a purple orchid for the shelf near the mirror and perhaps a few candle holders on the shelf like these along with a small tray to hold our perfume. below the sink, a white drawer unit, lacquered, for storing everything in the bath that you don't want seen. :) i want to paint above the tile a grayish lilac or dove gray and remember the shower curtain? white ruffles, already packed in my luggage. i also have my eye on this rug (in pale gray/white) but i have a few ideas so i'm not sure yet, including a horizontal black/white stripe rug. i want to make a small roman blind for the window in a black and white vertical pinstripe. i also found the perfect porcelain lamp to place in our bedroom on the window ledge until we order proper beside table lamps. then i will move the lamp to the hallway to place upon a low rolling table i plan to purchase at ikea. now to lay everything out in front of me and make some definite choices and start ordering. then i can move to the hallway because i just wrapped up my design for that area and want to order the furniture soon. i'd like to get some of the big things in place before i arrive, i don't want to have to stay home for the first month that i'm there every single day to sign for packages and deal with moving guys. august is such a beautiful month in germany, i want to enjoy the outdoors and see the sun too!

oh i know anna, they are amazing. i don't know of anyone here that sells them, i have googled the heck out of 'turkish fringe towels' and come up with nothing. danielle does ship them to america though...

when i am in germany i plan to go to the turkish street markets in berlin and i will try to find some at a reasonable price. do you want all white or white/gray combo? how many do you need? if i find some, i'll grab them and pack them and when i'm pack in the states around christmas i'll send them to you from nh. if you don't want them, i'll just keep them.

wait i think this place in la may have them, it's called distant. google for shop 'distant la' and write to the owner if you don't see them on the website. i think they sell lots of this ethnic stuff.

Thank you!! I found the Distant site:
http://shopdistant-la.com/shopdistant/

I don't see the plushy-plush towels on the site, but I will call. Yay! I hope she can hook me up. Thank you so much for offering to pick some up for me if I can't find them. I will let you know!

I am determined to have everything in my bathroom EXACTLY how I want it. I've been renovating for 2 years now, and I'll be damned if I'm going to put Martha Kmart towels in there when it's done.

anna i totally understand. we all have certain things that must be just so.

also try http://www.indigotraders.com or http://www.laviva-home.com, they have turkish stuff if distant cannot help you. i have talked to the owner at distant a few times, VERY nice people.

and while vivaterra.com doesn't stock them, they have some great bath things...

Here's what you can do in order to avoid rust on the lamps: paint a thin but solid coat of clear varnish on them, both inside and out. Do a few coats, and it will not rust.

Hello Holly

I've been lurking here a little while and just wanted to bob up briefly. I find your two blogs very inspiring - thank you! And, you know, your bathroom is going to be just beautiful.

Best wishes

Oh! Haus Maus, I love your style! I've been trying to convince my husband to move to Berlin from Melbourne (Australia) for quite a while now, so I'm doubly fascinated by your record of setting up your second home there.

I wish you the best of luck, and I'm sure your home will be absolutely beautiful!
