Wickeltasche (Diaper Bag) Recommendation?
Hello haus maus friends! Another thing on my list (well, Excel spreadsheet - yeah, I'm like that!), is that I need a Wickeltasche, or a diaper bag. But PLEASE, not the "Yummy Mummy" ones I've been seeing. I am looking for something stylish and understand without giraffe and bear motifs, please. I found this one, which is cute... Over at Boo Poo but it's out of stock.
So ladies... Any other stylish Wickeltasche in Germany or in the EU/UK that ship here?

Holly

They are both full of pockets everywhere, very strong, and washable (that is a very good point, I can tell you !).
Please look at what this brand makes, you won't regret it.
I love your blog, just came accross it!
We would be super happy if you would like to wait for the 6 great models coming out in December, I see you are in week 27, so no worries there should be plenty of time ...
I am sure you wouldn't regret it :-)

how about the diaper-bags from "lässig"? http://laessig-fashion.de/home/
I've got one, which manages to hold all the baby-equipment + my stuff and still looks "lässig" and not to kitschig...

As I found all diaper bags almost too big and too ugly, I am using a classic cotton tote bag (with nice print).
Inside I got a special towel to lay my baby on it.
And I have an inside plastic bag with diapers and all the stuff needed (+ small plastic bag for dirty clothes, very useful !)
I put my "diaper bag" on my shoulder or in the bottom of the kinderwagen. and that is it !
Now that my baby needs milk bottle and so, I just add a new small bag with this stuff.
Good luck for your hunt !

it's been a while since my own pregnancy but I still have a look at a nice german shopping site from time to time. Mamarella has a lot of wonderful and stylish dresses, pregnancy shirts, diaper bags, and more. How do like this bag http://www.mamarella.com/storksak.nina_wickeltasche_storksak_schwarz.4281.1.1.htm ?

I know a lot of women who never had one - because they didn't like any of the readyliy available ones and soon found out that they did not really need one.
I usually carry a rather large handbag anyway, so I got some pretty fabric and made a little drawstring bag to keep wipes a small toy and a few extra diapers and one pair of spare pants. Never needed more! Of course if you are not breastfeeding for any reason you will need to carry around a lot more things.
All the best! Love Heidi
Have you seen that Orla Kiely also makes diaper bags? http://www.orlakiely.com/uk.cfm/bags/multi%20stem/13SENMS049/23821/Multi/ or http://www.orlakiely.com/uk.cfm/Bags/Pre%20Season/13AESYM049/25545/_/
I want one and I don't even have a kid ;)

I am so sorry that those are links for Danish shops, but maybe you can get some help from a Danish friend, or google the brands?
BUT I was given a smaller "purse" with space for 3-4 diapers, a changing pad, small garbage bags and a spare onesie (for accidents...) and fits into my normal handbag. We moved to NYC, I started carrying my baby most of the time instead of taking the stroller, to which the Allerhand bag could be clipped easily. End of story: I ended up using the purse in my normal handbag almost ALL the time and can't be bothered to take the big diaper bag anymore.
As I'm nursing, add a muslin cloth and that's all I need at the moment. Not sure what it's like if you bottle-feed and want to have hot water and formula with you all the time though.

I'm using The lässig Green Label diaper bag and I like it very much. It comes with a bottle holder, a changing mat, a pencil case, a strap for the stroller and it also has an isolated pocket for wet clothes for example. And I think it looks great.

I heard that the pacapod.com does a good range of change bags.

I have just discovered your lovely blog.
For my first child, I bought a fancy diaper bag (and many other things I did not find useful for my second child bec I had more experience). For my second child, I simply used a nice bag I already had and filled it up with the things one usually find in a diaper bag. I liked the second solution better bec. I could now spot all diaper bags from a distance ! Whatever your decision, it is nice to have a bag with a small bag for food, a small bag for diapers, a padded changing towel or something like that, plastic bags, small toys, a baby bottle, spare clothes and bibs. I am probably forgetting something.
I found disposable bibs in Switzerland (Migros). Very useful on the go sometimes.
Maternity pillows are great. Choose one that is really "flexible" bec when your child is older, you can put the pillow on the floor. And your child drinks his milk there if you have to do sg else (very cosy).
Forget about washable diapers. PLEASE don't even think abt it. :-) Few people want to protect the environment as much as I do, but you will not have time. Having a child is exhausting. It is like doing a marathon (pregnancy and delivery) and then having to run again, with no time to rest. Not having time for oneself is exhausting and can be frustrating when one is very career-oriented and very dynamic (as you seem to be and as I am myself). Do not underestimate that. (I underestimated it bec books said my son would sleep 18 hours a day. Well, not exactly, and not when I wanted to sleep !). If you have extra time, spend it with your child, or your husband, or just with yourself, not cleaning diapers (plus, liquid detergents are not that good for the environment anyway !). I might be wrong on the rest but I know I am right on that one !!
Buy soft and special washing powder to clean his clothes in case he has a sensitive skin (natural Marseille soap, the real one, not the copies, etc.). Use Marseilles soap or soft soap on his skin, and sweet almond oil. It is good to have almond oil right at the beginning because babies' feet are often dry.
I thought my baby would be "happy" to "see" his bedroom as soon as possible. After all, I had spent hours renovating and decorating it, right ? In fact, babies can find it overwhelming. They have just started adapting to the hospital sounds, smells and air....and here they are, in a new place, with new sounds, smells, lights, etc. For some babies, it is just too much...and they will cry. My baby did, I was a little sad, I was glad the nurse had told me it might happen. Just be ready for it just in case...You can show him around a little later, after his nap.
Anyway, there is nothing like having a child. A lot of work, but even more love. It also make you see the world differently. The best thing ever !
Also, as you live in Germany, you might find yourself wanting to "revive" some US traditions because they were part of your childhood and you want to share them with your baby. I celebrate traditions I never thought were important to me ! I discovered they were important to me when I had children....because I realized they would not "survive" in the family if I did not celebrate them. That could make your October months "easier" !
Finally, speak English to your child, don't ever mix languages. Your husband has to speak German to him, not German and English. That is THE main secret to bilingualism. (My boys speak 3 languages).
I also learnt that in the end, YOU are the one who knows what your baby needs or wants. Trust your instincts. It is your baby, no one knows him better than YOU do.
Hire a photographer for family shoots, with the 3 of you. I did not, and I regret it.
Very last thing : most babies cry in a different way according to what they want (food, diaper issue, cold/hot). Try and spot the difference after a few weeks. It will help you/him a lot !
I hope this helps ! Welcome to the wonderful world of motherhood.
All the best.
Lauren
Me again !! (but this piece of advice is important, I promise).
I personally believe that a baby's life is quite boring. -:) Some babies do not mind, others do. If your baby belongs to the second category, you might want to add a little diversity : a baby reclining chair, a baby activity mat, and a baby swing are three ways to put yout baby in a different position...thus adding a little diversity in his life (different position, different movements, different vision angle). Some babies do not like swings, though. Basically, I had a swing in the living room, a chair in the kitchen, the pad in his room... I wish I had done that with my first child. I did it with my second child and it really helped ! Otherwise, the baby can only be in your arms or lying. I believe it is even truer for winter babies who cannot go to the park as often.
All the best,
Laurence
