Lilacs Take Me Back

Whenever I see lilacs I think of New Hampshire. We had two huge lilac bushes outside of our bedroom windows there and they were so fragrant that we had to close the windows when they bloomed or else the smell would overwhelm you. As in, you could potentially faint.

Gee lilacs are pretty

I love the way they look, don't you? But you see I'm a tad allergic so I've never been a fan of bringing them indoors.

Until Thursday. Big mistake.

Pretty is as pretty does

I found some freshly cut lilacs at the farmers' market and couldn't resist. I buried my nose into their thick, soft blossoms that both tickled and delighted my nose. I took in their perfume. I wasn't going to leave without buying a bunch.

And so I did. But...

After having them in my workroom at home, I couldn't handle the smell. I have a huge office and all of the windows were wide open and yet I still could not enjoy my lilacs as I had hoped. I then thought of New Hampshire and was instantly transported back to our 1875 carriage house on a pond bordering a huge apple orchard. Funny how a smell can take you back. I felt a wave of nostalgia. Then I brought the flowers into my husband's room in the back of the house and "gave" him the lilacs as a gift. Sorta like when you hand the baby over to your partner when the diaper is full. This was the same exchange. Me, slightly ready to pass out and he, looking at me like, "Why are you giving me these?". Lucky for me, he took them.

Thankfully I snapped a few photos before I had to part ways with my beautiful lilacs. Aren't they lush?

I live in MA and I love lilacs too. In my first apt in MA there was a HUGE lilac tree/bush in my yard and the love affair began! They are the perfect shade aren't they?

I do love the look of lilacs (yours really are particularly lush), but they are best kept outdoors. My parents have two in their garden and when the wind blows in the direction of the terrace one gets just a gentle whiff of them. If you stand near them it can get more than a little overwhelming.

Familiar smalls are so transporting. I am amazed every time I encounter one that takes me to a different plane and time.

I love lilacs, but yes: I know what you mean...spirea, jasmin and lilies in large quantities do that to me as well. Still, beautiful indeed.

I LO00000VE lilacs. They're my favourite, favourite ever. I love them even more than Magnolias. When I was younger my mum told me not to bring them inside or I wouldn't be able to sleep.
But now I just bring them inside all the time and I just love them. I can be sensitive to other smells but not lilac, thankfully.... I LOVE them. <3

They are gorgeous blooms but I understand about how they can be overwhelming! Totally unlike hyacinths which also smell just gorgeous and I can have a house filled with them but never be overcome by them...am sure hubby loved the lilacs LOL even if he was a bit confused :) You take such beautiful pics, how do you get that dreamy effect? I'm looking for a new camera lens but have no idea what to get. You're inspiring me though (as always)

He he, you are funny Holly. But I totally relate. I'm like that with lilies - those star gazer ones with the yellow pollen inside are the worst. I really can't take the smell. And they put them in quite a lot of bouquets!
Lilac are such a nice flower to photograph though and you got some beautiful shots.
Oh and I never pick Alliums either as they smell bad of onions! ;)

Not only eyes and hears, but also nose and mouth contain powerful memories. I can understand why you couldn't leave without a bunch of those lilacs, they look enchanting! - Barbara

We have a giant white lilac tree right off of our balcony and it's gorgeous. It can get a little heady sitting out there, but when I leave the door open it wafts in just enough to make the house smell wonderful.

I love this post. Granted, I'm also biased and I live in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Lilacs have always been my favorite flower.

If I should manage to get a few good photos, I will be sure to send your way!

How lovely they look.
Also I was wondering if you would check out my last post about my future appartment - it's just that I love your style and I kinda have a little issue considering the present color of the living room's wall - orange. It bothers me but unfortunately we are not allowed to overpaint it. So I really need help and would highly appreciate it if you'd leave any advice or idea if there is any. Thank you.
Much love,
Jay.

I snapped a couple of photos of the lilacs I've been bringing in the house. We have a pretty big stand of them on our property and this is the week it smells heavenly outdoors and wafting in through the windows...

I adore lilac since I have very similar memories about them.
I guess it is almost over with lilac season and I am so sad about it, I used to hurry to my office knowing there will be this scent and colour :-)

Beautiful images. The colors are almost transparent.
The lilac's are just beautiful. I remember as a little girl having them around the outside of my bedroom window. I don't ever see them down here in the Houston, TX area. I think they need a good freeze to bloom and make it. It is just to warm here. I wish I could smell your office area right now. Brings back lots of memories that I had forgotten about.
These are beautiful. It is really nice to see how many flowers dwell in your home. Nothing brings more quick character and changing color than a simple arrangement.

So funny the look your husband gave to you :) Men can get flowers too! Too cute.

Do you have a lot of milk glass in your house? All these tulips, peonies and lilac I see I could just imagine fun crisp vessels hanging about.

Best!

Your pictures are breathtaking. Are you using the same point and shoot from a few years ago...I think you said it was Linux or something.

I think Lilacs are some of the most beautiful flowering plants around. I love everything about them...except the smell. There is something about their scent that gives me a headache and makes me slightly nauseous. And I keep trying them, too. I want to adore them, but so far no such luck.
