Kitchen Progress!
Okay I'm on a roll with posts today! Ha! So since the last post earlier today, my once empty room of a kitchen is now full! I have a new kitchen now and I'm very happy with it. I also LOVE my shiny Smeg oven and my wood counter tops, they are quite pretty though yes, I am aware that they will be a pain to care for. The price we pay for beauty, right ladies!?
The kitchen has a wonky floor plan, it appears to be a rectangle, and it is, but it also has a wall that is tricky as it is not flat but has not one, but two, angles to deal with. And the kitchen has 3 doors in it -- one goes to the washer/dryer, the other to the broom/utilities closet and the other is the entry door. Also we already had the gas and water hookups in place when we moved in, the owner installed them where they wanted them, so the sink had to go to the right and the gas/electric stove to the left. And the stove had NO lower outlets, only high ones so that was also tricky.
But we did it, we planned the kitchen ourselves using the IKEA software and viola! We still are missing handles to the drawers to the right of the stove, and above the stove we will install a hood nd then over the counter to the right of the hood I want to get a vintage cabinet with glass doors and then to the left of the hood, a few open shelves perhaps. But for now, I am very pleased with the results because it wasn't as easy as it looks -- plus we had limited space since we wanted the Smeg so badly... and so we had to play a bit with mixing and matching the sizes of things.
Now I'm thinking of wallpapering the kitchen, I have to decide... and I need a light fixture and a small table for in front of the window, I have two stools from wood & wool stool so I'll most likely leave them in the kitchen since I think they'll look cute in the space. Also a small rug near the sink and decorations... But for now, here is the kitchen in progress!

It's so clean...
Can't wait to see how you add your personal touches and what colours you choose.

Sometimes I really wonder why German houseowners have to use such ugly tiles (got them in the bathroom), so I'd definitely go for some wallpaper in here! And yeah, that stove rocks!
Glad you're getting to settle in finally, makes all the difference! Can't wait to see all your finishing touches, I know they'll be great!
These photos are brilliant, love the bear but this house is amazing! It must a fantastic place to get away at weekends during winter time

In this kitchen I would only put something under smeg in order to create one continuing line...

Is the floor/back splash marble tile? On my computer it looks gray with a marbled pattern, but maybe that's just my monitor?
It's going to look super cute when it's finished!
What kinds of wallpapers are you thinking about?
@Elissa - The fridge is opposite the bookcase on the facing wall though we plan to move it to the wall next to the closet door. When you move you can take your kitchen with you if you can fit it into your new flat, otherwise you can leave it in the current one and offer it for a price to the next tenants. We left our last one to the next tenant, it was our gift to them since it was my husband's brother and he just took our old flat! :)
@JJA - I like showing the legs to the Smeg so I'm keeping it as is, it doesn't bother me about having one continuing line or not. I was going to go for solid white cabinetry with a cooker on top of the counter and put a built-in oven on the wall near my fridge but I just loved the Smeg so much as a freestanding unit.
@Lisa - The ceramic tile on the walls has a light gray marble pattern to it, it's very faint, but it's there. It's standard German tile in most new kitchens here, every rental has them pretty much. The floor is pure white ceramic with no pattern, which I like actually, it's easy to maintain and much nicer than our last floor which was grayish stone and such a pain to maintain - it absorbed every spill and you had to scrub it to death to get it clean. This floor is a breeze. I'm still debating over whether to wallpaper or not so I'm not going to get anyone excited over it, including myself, because it is a lot of work since the house is 110 years old and I don't know what lies beneath the current wallpaper that is up -- I don't want to pull it down and have to deal with some nightmare, so we'll see.
The finish is great. It is natural, but water resistant and I've left things sit on the counter that I though surely would stain, but the marks have wiped up easily. And it is a renewable finish. You don't have to put it on as often as mineral oil, but can touch up just the spots that are showing wear.
I plan on using it to refinish a vintage morris chair next and then the oak floors in my house.
