Flea Market Goodies

Yesterday I spent some time at the flea market and I picked up four things... a vintage German school chart with birds on it (8,-), a wood shelf that I will paint (2,50) another wood shelf that I will also paint which is shaped like a house (2,50) and a vintage necklace from Denmark (10,-). Not bad loot for 23 Euros! I want to do something with the shelf like Jane does with hers -- paint, wallpaper, etc.

Flea Market Loot

Here are the ones that Jane paints and papers... Pretty! I hope to try something like it with the ones that I've found above. Wish me luck!

Jane's work

I will soon start hitting more and more flea markets only this time, in Belgium and the Netherlands, and also some in nearby German cities (like Berlin) and small towns. I plan to mix old and new in my flat and it's also a great way to not have to spend a lot of money to decorate and furnish an entire home. Plus I want to be more creative and recycle! Any flea markets that you'd suggest nearby or within a 3 hour drive from Hannover?

Hi Holly,

Try the flea markets in Hamburg. You can find more information browsing the local newspaper `Hamburger Abendblatt`. The best bargains can be found going to smaller flea markets in the outskirts of the city.

Cheers,

I love love love Flea markets. You found some really good finds.. Would love to see the before and afters, once they are made over. :)

Don't paint them! One day you will wish they were still plain wood... Sorry; I do like the inspirations you posted, but when you find ones that are intact and perfect and haven't been painted, I would suggest you think hard before going to paint, 'cause it takes so long to take paint back off. They can be just so easily filled with lovelies without paint and paper, and real, crafted wood pieces get rarer by the year. Just a thought... Best– the apartment looks fantastic!

Going to the flea markets here in Denmark has been my favorite thing we have done yet! I've been checking them all out and trying to get a feel for which one or ones I like best... 5 down and many more to go! :-) I LOVE that bird chart. I would have snatched it up too! The necklace you found reminds me of the jewelry sold in Morocco. You are going to have so much fun shopping there!

I have those photos saved in my favorites of the wooden shelves too! I found one in the States at a thrift shop that was so cheap. I'll paint it and add paper when it gets here. My daughter loves tiny little things like shells, animals, and rocks. I decided it was time to give them a pretty place of honor rather than shoving them into the back of the drawer and hoping they would hurry up and disappear!

Let me know when you go to Holland and need company - this country's really big on cheap flea market goodies!
He he he, I've got 3 (!) of these Setzkasten in my basement waiting to be painted and filled with goodies and I had to beg my boyfriend's parents to STOP giving me more :)
Btw if you always go to Leineufer - why not try Messe or Langenhagen, those ones are HUGE. It's like a shopping mall vs a boutique :)

Hello everyone,

My boyfriend has recently relocated to Dusseldorf and I visit him from the UK at weekends.
Can you recommend any flea markets near Dusseldorf that we can visit together to help decorate his new flat? (And if I'm honest where I can buy lovely things)

Many thanks,
Annie
The little shelf units are too cute, especially the house shaped one. They will look great painted.

Hello,
I wanted to recommend to you the big fleamarket in Bonn (Rheinaue). It is sadly a bit more than three hours drive from Hannover, but it is huge (maybe 3-4 hours if you want to walk evry street and do not walk slow). A mix of private and professionals. And you can buy almost anything there.
Here's a link: http://www.bonn.de/tourismus_kultur_sport_freizeit/veranstaltungskalender/45013/index.html

I go there almost evry time and brought home way to much precious stuff.
Cheers

Hi Holly,
as I am from Berlin I can recommend you some fleamarkets, where I normally find something gorgeous...

Of course the quite famous one at the "Mauerpark" every sunday.
http://www.mauerparkmarkt.de/

The other one is at Boxhagener Platz in Friedrichshain.

And also there is quite new one in Neukölln where there are many booths...
http://www.nowkoelln.de/

I also not have been to this one
http://www.raw-flohmarkt.de

So in every case it would be an "event" to stroll over the markets . Good Luck and many good finds
Hi from Texas from a German :)
I found your blog while surfing through some other blogs and since my heart partly still is in Germany, although I'm living in Texas for several years now, I read your posts with special interest. If I'm not mistaken so Paula Jo, my wife is reading and commenting on your blog frequently.
Anyway, I always loved to explore the flea markets there and to hunt for little treasures and I'm having here a harder time to find something at a good price than I ever had there.
The vintage school chart would for sure have been my pick too. You won't find them very often anymore.
So good luck and have lots fun with your next visits of flea markets. I'll be back here to read more soon again.

In dutch these shels are called letterkast. itmeens lettecupboard as original people used old drawers form a printercompany to display stuff. It take s a while but you need to go to holland on queensday (the 30th of april. The countruy is the biggest fleamarket in the world then!
Oh, these are just perfect! I love what Jane did with them and I KNOW you will make yours just as beautiful. Can't wait to see the results....love that idea!

Love your flea market finds! I'm an avid flea market (and thrift store)trawler myself and have found great things for our home over the years, including West German pottery from the 60s and 70s, which I collect. It's a wonderful way of giving a home character through a mix of old and new (and budget friendly, too!)I would also like to thank you for all the inspirational work you do here and on decor8. I'm an American living in Germany too (Kassel) and I have added your blogs to my own blogroll, hope you don't mind.

Hi Holly,
First off, I have been reading your blog for a while and really enjoy it. So when you ask for advice on good flea markets, I feel I need to recommend the Sunday market in Tongeren, Belgium. It's the biggest antique market in the Benelux and is on every Sunday from 6am until 1pm, year round. Tongeren is a bit over 3h away from Hannover, but it is also a wonderful old city in its own right and a place where you could easily spend a weekend. The market is really amazing, I never come back empty-handed. You can read a review at http://www.expatica.com/be/leisure/travel_tourism/tongeren--antique-buff-heaven-969.html
Groetjes from Belgium!

Lovely thrift finds! In Holland we have got a lot of thriftstores. I like the departments of De Kringloper (near Amsterdam). Just take a look on my blog: http://stofenzo.blogspot.com for the addresses.

When I was living in Germany flea markets were one of my favortie weekend activities. I enjoyed the antique market in Tongeren and also the flea market in Metz, France. Metz may be a little over 3 hours from Hannover but well worth the drive. Thanks for sharing your treasures!
