{in the mirror}

first of all I want to say hello to everyone who reads this blog so I took a few self portraits as I was cleaning and ripping apart (and organizing) my living/dining room today. ta-dah! it's me, the person behind the blog. I'm a real girl, truly, a real human being. No blog-bot!
A little self portrait action taken today.
and a booty shot for ya. just 'cuz I love ya so much! :) Smack!
okay so enough holly photos. now you see me, now you don't! on with decorating! i'm starting to get a feel for my apartment after nearly 8 weeks here. i finally know how we will use the space and what i need to do at this point to make it feel like home. for one, the living room needs roman blinds, which i've ordered and they should arrive in 3 weeks. next, i want to paint the wall behind the sofa and china cabinet and i'm thinking in a warmish grey or a medium plum to add some depth and feeling to the room. i've also decided to put my standing mirror over the sofa and run a slim picture shelf below it so i can rotate in/out artwork. that will look pretty and the mirror over the sofa against a painted wall will give the illusion of space -- without the mirror the room could look a bit narrow or like it's closing in otherwise, especially since I do not plan to paint the other walls. of course my sofa table is not staying, it's just a basket flipped on its head! I'm still trying to find a coffee table that is not square or rectangular -- I'm looking for a triangular shape with round edges, oval, or a round table in wood or with a black base and a hammered metal top. Still looking for the perfect coffee table! I do not want square or rectangular because I need to soften up the space a bit and as I look around I see too many hard edges (table, carpet, cabinet, sofa, tv, windows, room shape, etc.). This is exactly why I purchased such an expensive rice paper globe for my living room - this extremely expensive pendant cost around 5- Euros total (ha ha) but it gives me exactly the look that I want... ROUND. SOFT. And slightly feminine without causing my husband's heart to burst from over exposure to girly stuff. I can't wait to paint the wall, find a coffee table, hang the mirror, my artwork, the ledge over the sofa... And I'm dying to find the right lounge chair and a stool for my square cushion to place at the end of my dining room table. I'm also going to hang a round metal pendant over my table (already have it and love it), paint my dining room chairs and reupholster them, and add a bright fun rug beneath my table from India -- I'm on the hunt for a flat weave rug and I have budgeted the money to splurge a little on one so I'm going to visit this Persian man I know here tomorrow... Wish me luck! And a little something special to add... Thorsten's oma gave us this china in 2001 when we got married but we didn't want to send it to America so we kept it here in Germany in her china cabinet until we eventually lived here. We told her when we moved over we'd invite her over for tea on it. She passed away last Fall so the china was left to us. Now we are in our apartment, which was once her apartment, and the china is in a cabinet on the same wall where the china was kept for 23 years before we moved in. Sweet huh? I set the table (above) so that it looks somewhat presentable over here as tomorrow night is girls night - my close friend and newly adopted little sister (he he) anne is coming over for wine, snacks, a movie -- and lots of crafts and messy paint! yay!!! this is the table where the magic will happen... want to join us? xo, Holly

You look very cute, Holly (thank you for the booty shot, hee!), and the place is really starting to look like HOME. I love your table... the white in the grain of the wood is gorgeoussssss.
I LOVE when bloggers take self portraits and you look FABULOUS! As does your table, sounds like it is going to be a great night!

You might want to check out the current issue of House Beautiful which features a New Orleans home with lots of lovely purple shades. The dining room has an amazing plummy color called Shantung by Martha Stewart for Sherwin Williams. Not sure if it's available where you are but it really made me consider purple as a color I could actually paint my own walls.

Hello, beautiful Holly. Nice to meet you ;))
I´m loving everything in your house and regarding your china (what a lovely story)it seems like the one my grand-mother had. It has a small horse ? If yes, the drawing is the same.

Hi Holly, I absolutely love your apartment, it's coming along so well. I like your idea of painting the living room wall a soft gray. Let me know if you find a good color. I've had paint swatches taped to my living room wall for at least six months and I cannot make a decision. I was going to go with Benjamin Moore's Decorator White for my living room/kitchen area (they are open to each other) and I have design ADD as most of us here do, so I do want to keep it neutral without going beige. I'm just afraid it's going to look unfinished because my walls are textured (as most tract homes in AZ are), so lately I've been thinking of a light grey but don't want it to look dingy, either. I have vaulted ceilings and decent natural light and my (current) scheme is black/white/aqua/yellow although I'm stuck with raisin colored sofas. I would love your opinion on the matter if you get a chance:)

Sorry for the long comment, I just love your style and thought you might have some insight for me. Also, I saw a super cute print on etsy that made me think of you (hopefully I don't sound like a stalker) but it had a picture of a teapot like you're in search of and a cute girl with pretty colors. It's the "tea with emma" print in Lindsay Brackeen's shop www.lindsayart.etsy.com She's one of my favorites, I'm sure I found her through your recommendations:)

Thanks,
Lisa

Everything is coming together so beautifully! We have a paper pendant lamp like yours in our dining room - it really is a lot of bang for the buck (or Euro)!!

I can't wait to see the color you choose for the wall behind the sofa.

Thanks so much for sharing this little decorating journey :-)

Ok, first of all....how adorable are you?! So pretty, and so cute for putting in a booty shot! :) It makes me think of that Ellen Degeneres routine where she says "...and booty smack, and booty smack" Do you know what I am talking about? *whew* Anyway, so you are beautiful, your apartment is divine and it is heartbreaking sweet that Thorsten's grandma's china is having a second life and so unfortunate that she can't join you for tea. Oh, how much do I wish I could come over for girl's night?! It sounds like heaven! Truly! Thank you for sharing sweet Holly!

Lovely china...is red ware popular in Germany then? I like the sound of your shelf for revolving artwork especially with the mirror there as well.Enjoy your crafting.

Just a thought as I did not know that was your late MIL's apartment... maybe that is one of the reasons why the people who come over love and admire your decorating style....because it is so different to what they have and what went before. Apart from its fabulousness that is!

hey holly,
i just LOVE the china. it's amazing. reminded me of those french tapestry. and a bit of dutch paintings/ceramics. you know, the golden age of dutch fine arts.pretty amazing stuff you have. i am so jealous*smirk* i have a suggestion for you wall. i painted my wall a year ago in a warm grey. you can buy the colour at obi. i like it when the colour changes into a deep purple, but on a different light its only a warm grey. maybe you like it. think the colour is: G45/6G2-5; braun/grau 42.you can choose between matt and seidenglänzend. on the wall ist a bit lighter. it's only a suggestion.but it worked really well for me. so, have anice day.

oh i totally forgot: the colour i was talking of is called: obi classic. they will mix it for you and it doesn't cost afortune. me, being a student, is living on a budget. but it was worth it*g* if i will ever have the chance of getting a digicam i will take pictures of my new room along with old ones and you will have a look. friends, who come over, are always impressed.and they feel comfy in my tiny little room, which tells me its all good*G*

Love the booty shot!LOL! Apartment is coming along real nice! My vote goes to plum shade behind the sofa. I have an apartment overseas also (in Portugal) so I've been decorating it over the last 2 years (only when I get a chance to get over). I should post some pics on my blog however my blog's more about fashion & beauty. Anyhoo, I love Europe! What part of Germany are you in?
