{inspiration binders}

i noticed danielle posted images from her inspiration binder today so perhaps i should share mine here on haus maus to give you a broad idea of what i'm going for in my apartment design. think natural bohemian, mixing modern with vintage (not antiques necessarily), moroccan, turkish, french, asian and scandinavian, very tactile, white and gray as a base, some natural wood and silver as accents, color as accents (goldenrod, lilac, green, pink, somewhat muted) and a very lived-in "i've been here for ten years already" vibe. laid-back and easy. here are some pages from my apt inspiration binder. i also have paint swatches, a floor plan, and fabric clippings in the back. these binders keep me on track when i'm shopping as i often get design attention deficient disorder in stores and walk out with items that i did not go in for, or i walk out with nothing at all and head to a cafe for chai to climb out of my design hole. i tend to stress a little when i do not carry my trusty binder. my handbags are always pretty deep, so usually one slim binder, a bottled water, my wallet, and other miscellany does the trick -- these 'tools' are all i need to make shopping a success. oh and a measuring tape. my god how i value it. it's easiest to tear pages from magazines and compile them inside of a binder with plastic inserts vs. lugging entire magazines in my suitcase. only a few random pages in magazines inspire me anyway so why not rip out the pearls and recycle the rest? i only hold on to domino and the now expired blueprint, filing them away in magazine folders. everything else gets torn into bits and images are sorted and placed into binders. when i work with clients the first thing i give them is a binder for this exact same exercise. it's highly effective and so simple to do. this totally helps you to focus on a look, recall the items you really want when standing in the middle of a showroom with 10,000 options, and it's a smart and inexpensive way to organize what's in your head. in addition to binders, i also keep inspiration books (or look books/journals) with drawings, photos, art, and everything else inside. those can range from decorating to fashion and are quite random in how they are organized, especially lately. i don't typically share them with friends or family, they can be a bit personal. some are not personal at all, and i've showed a glimpse or two of them on decor8 in the past. nowadays i work more with binders since i find it easier to maintain them (no glue!) and when i tire of a look i can replace it easily. decor8 is my primarily version of an online inspiration book and i like it because even when i travel i have it nearby to access, same goes for haus maus. how do you organize things so that you shop successfully?

Beautiful! Love the idea of a smaller-working-travelling binder. I use sketch books about 10" x 20" to keep all my clippings. But I normally start by putting all my clippings into separate plastic boxes (from ikea) - labelling them as home, cooking etc and sticking a post-it onto each clipping about why i like it. when i have time, i go through the plastic boxes and organize the clippings and stick them into the sketchbook. Although I really love binders with pockets. I just often feel - I will never buy enough of the pockets to hold all the ideas. miss Blueprint a lot too... wish they would bring it back.

Your place is going to be truly beautiful. I love these binders you've put together. I have no good way of organizing my design inspiration. I keep so many magazines and can't remember where I saw something. It's hard for me to tear up a magazine. I know that's strange, but I think it comes from a background of respecting books and the written word. So thanks for the pictures of how great it can look when you rebuild them with only the things that speak to you. I will buy binders and some art books this week.

Your inspiration books must be wonderful to look at. It is true that you can spot patterns quicker if you organize everything in one book.

I buy between 15 to 25 magazines a month. I want to streamline my house. Since there are a few pictures/articles that are worth keeping by issue, I am starting 3 binders: cooking, entertaining ideas, interior design. I will see if I need one or two more topics. When a book gets full, I plan to update the pictures. We will see how it goes.

Once again you have inspired me to take another step in siting my likes and coveting them in a way that gives them clarity.

It looks beautiful Holly! It is fun to see that I have some of the same picture as you have in my inspiration binder (from 101 woonideeen, VT Wonen and the Swedish magazines we bought in Stockholm!).

hi holly!
i use the same plastic sleeves! It is a good idea to keep what you like and discard the rest, otherwise you overload on magazines and run out of space like i did. it took me forever to go through all my mags but i love going back to my binders for inspiration.
i love the style you are going for your new place. Cant wait to see the final result!

I'm so glad you posted pictures of your binder – now I can prove to my husband I am not mad! I have tons of pulled pages from old magazines, I just haven't got round to putting them all in my binders yet.

Hi Holly!
I am also a member of the 'inspiration binder society' but recently (well about a year now) I am a bit stuck on what to do with inspirational images I find online. I stopped buying magazines as much as I used to, because I find SO many things online, but the downside is I don't enjoy as much browsing slideshows from saved images. What do u guys do ?

p.s. I really enjoy this blog

I also get a lot of inspiration online. What I do is print the picture & then put it in a plastic sleeve in my notebooks. Unfortunetly, I have a lot of notebooks with no real order. But I love looking through all the ideas I've collected.

wow, holly! i thought i was the only one who filed away clippings from magazines like you do! actually, i got the idea from my mother... one binder of ideas has turned into 30 binders. we separate them by different rooms (bedroom, kitchen, etc), gardening ideas, and so forth. every time i need a little inspiration, i turn to my "inspirational binders." if there are certain decor items i'd like to find one day, i cut and paste them into a blank journal book. so far, this has been the best way to organize my ideas. otherwise, if i find something online (i.e. like your blogs!), i save the image(s) and categorize them like i did with the binders.

also, you are so lucky to be living in germany! i grew up there for most of my life. you should check out Neubert (huge furniture and home decor store).

Oh, I'm in eye candy heaven! Inspirational indeed and I love the way you describe the style you're going for in your new place, Holly. I always have such an impossible time finding the right words - no matter how many of them I string together - to describe my design aesthetic... Best of luck to you!
Your inspiration binders books must be wonderful to look at.I get good idea from your post.
