{bed + mattress}

tah-dah! i'm happy to share the news for you -- i just ordered a bed frame. i know, it's not about to change your life but it certainly contributed to a little happiness for me today. it's our first piece of furniture so i'm excited. ordering furniture not experienced in person is a tough hurdle for my brain to jump but when my apartment is 5,500 miles from where I now live what are my options? then again, it's just a white slipcovered bed frame but still. hurdle jumped! now it's time to order the mattress and this is where i need your help. but first, why i selected this bed out of the 30,000 options out there.
  • i wanted a frame high enough to slide (and hide) storage containers beneath.
  • no wood exposure, the floors are a light honey-ish pergo as it is, i want to tone them down.
  • nothing contemporary or sci-fi looking, as most bed frames i found online, at least in germany, seem to ooze ultra contemporary with lots of faux wood accents. i think we left the 80's decor styles behind for a reason. i don't think i'm ready for flashbacks.
  • it needed to be larger than my current queen sized bed at home. this one is 180 x 200 so it's almost a king. right? i have not yet mastered the metric system.
  • pure white and simple. clean lines. nothing ornate, carved, iron, wood, patterned... just white. but not white leather, or white pleather, nothing tufted, no white wood, etc. just white cotton so this slipped look with a little kick pleat on the bottom corners totally works.
  • not overly feminine but girly enough. :)
  • the bed needed to have slats because box springs are not common in germany but slats are (these slats are called lattenrost). thing is, i wanted slats that fit the frame so buying both frame and slat together eliminated screwing things up on my part by and ordering slats that didn't quite fit the frame. plus it's cheaper to order a bed with slats. at least from what i noticed after browsing a zillion german furniture stores online.
  • it needed to be available online and the shipping fee needed to be reasonable. i purchased it at octopus in hamburg and delivery down to hannover was only 50,-€!
now for the mattress. buying something as important to my health without first laying on it freaks me out a bit. but in the next few days i need to order it so that we have a bed with mattress by the time we're there, 10 weeks from now. can you help? i have a question about the Sultan Hasselback mattress from ikea, does anyone have one and how is it? we currently have a memory foam and find it very hot and a bit too squishy. i really don't like it although it's extremely comfortable it's a bit overly soft. how is the sultan? we need a 180 x 200, and this one is 409,-€ so i think the price is okay. i wouldn't mind finding one a bit cheaper since the bed was $499,€ but as I mentioned already, it included lattenrost. any suggestions on an ikea mattress since i won't be able to try before i buy?

Hi Holly,
i love that bedframe! nice job!

we bought the most expensive Sultan foam mattress. (not that it means it's better, but b/c it may add some perspective...?) I forget which one it was, but we did notice they discontinued it...i believe. anyhow - we tried all the mattresses out about a million times at Ikea, and narrowed it down to the foam one. Mainly b/c all the rest didn't feel like they held up well to all the Ikea testers. (but who knew how recently replaced our choice was? we had to take the leap)

all said and done - it's not as comfy as what I had State-side (good quality spring mattress on boxspring). No matter how I adjust our decent lattenrosts, it still just feels too firm or something to me. Are the lattenrosts on your new bed frame adjustable? Also - I've spent many a night on a Tempurpedic and always found it a tad too squishy for my taste.

Maybe that helps you a bit?? Buying a mattress is always scary and a leap of faith in my book!

We have them in all sizes on all our beds and we are hapy with them. But I hate soft matresses and we chose the hardest one.
Glad you found a bed at octopus!!!

Hej Holly,

My boyfriend has a Hasselbäck mattress - I like it a lot, it is a rather firm mattress!

Maybe it's because I have a cheap old mattress at my place... but I really want to buy a Hasselbäck later on this year.

Hi Holly,
We have this mattress on our guest bed and everyone always tells me that it is really comfortable. I even slept one night in the guest room just to try it and it's great!

thank you ladies for the feedback, it really helps. part of me wants to go to germany and sleep on an air mattress for a few nights... maybe i should do that because i think i risk more if i buy a mattress that is uncomfortable. i have a bad back, my last mattress made it worse and my current one, although too soft, seems to be perfect for me because i have had no back problems for the 4 years that we've had it...

hmmm...

thank goodness for blogs, putting our brains on the table really helps. i think i may wait on the mattress and just blow up an air mattress for a few nights.

Not sure if this is of any help but, we just purchased and are enjoying immensely the Stearns & Foster (http://www.stearnsandfoster.com) luxury latex set. It's supposedly the same one they have at the Plaza hotel.

somebody feel free to correct me, but I also feel it's worth noting that over my own months of bed discussions with german friends, I haven't seen/heard of folks who use a 'topper' like an egg crate, etc. So you want to make sure the mattress is just what you want. (I think the air mattress start may be the best option)

Also - on that whole topper thing, I have yet to see a fitted sheet that is deep enough to accommodate anything else under it. (although our Pottery Barn queen size fitted is nice and deep and actually works on our 180x200)
Oh holly....this bed is perfect! Just perfect! I am in love and only wish I needed a new bed! Delicious. I think your idea of using the air mattress until you can check them out over there is a great one! Good luck!

Hallo Holly,

normally you get a period of three months for testing all your ikea bedroom stuff (pillows, matresses ...) so you can bring them back if you don´t like them. I´m not sure, if this works also if you´re buying online ...
Personally, I had a sultan matress in my parents house years ago and liked it a lot.

I bought the Sultan Hasselback mattress as a single guestbed and I've been using it whilst crashing at my friend's place (my original bed was from The W Hotel). It's a VERY firm mattress which some people make less firm by adding their base or a pillow top. After awhile it softens but it really is more on the firm side.

I don't know if it's in your budget, but my favourite bed is the Four Seasons Hotel and they do sell in Germany - just contact the nearest one. That said, if you like a hotel near where you are, call and ask them what their beds are and how to get them. I've done this with a few places.

I, too, have a bad back. I think using an air mattress while you find a good-for-you mattress is a great idea. A funny thing: while staying in NYC for a week a few years ago, my husband and I had to use an air mattress. We slept better than we had in years. We knew we had to get rid of our bed at home then! After trying every type of bed imaginable, we ended up with a Select Comfort and love it.

I think a bed is really try, before you buy. They're too expensive to screw up if your health depends on it. Good luck!

Holly,

You might also want to consider going to an Ikea stateside. There's one in Stoughton, MA and it might be worth the trip to try before you buy. Then you can find what you like here, and buy it there.

Anon - I thought of that but was told that the beds at IKEA in Germany are much different from the U.S. ones. But now I'm wondering if this is genuinely the case because I can't imagine that each country has different mattress standards. I'm glad that you have mentioned this, I'm going to research this further. That would save me TONS of work.

We have the hasselback and an Ikea topper on our bed and we love it, but we spent ages trying mattresses to get something that was ideal. I know our mattress models in the UK are the same as the US and Scandinavian mattresses in everything except dimensions -- it does seem that standard varies from country to country. At UK Ikea stores, you can buy the mattress in 'UK size' or 'Ikea size' because Ikea bedframes are made to the Scandinavian size standard...if that makes any sense (alas, we did not know this and therein lies the tale of how we bought a new bedframe). I haven't shopped at a German Ikea but it seems to me that you would be pretty safe trying the mattresses stateside -- I would just check the online catalogue to make sure they stock the ones you like in Germany, as every once in a while I will see something online from US Ikea only to find out it hasn't been picked up for the UK market.

Hello Holly,

may I suggest chains like Matratzen Concord etc. when you are on location in Germany ... they have excellent prices for brand-name mattresses.
When I relocated USA to Germany I did the same : sleep on an airbed and then decide on the Lattenroste etc. (I actually believe in spending more on both, the adjustable slated frame/s and the mattress than the bedframe. My poor back is doing very well). Anyway, I find the quality a lot better than Ikea.

All the best and good luck !
I am very happy for you and your new home ...

p.s. may I recommend a soc. Matratzenschoner. It is a a sturdy piece of special fabric to be put on top of the Lattenrost and then you put the mattress on top. Also stops some dust getting on your underbed storage ...

Hi Holly,

Gorgeous bed frame - well to wear!
I have a sprung mattress in my bedroom (king size), and a foam one in the guest room (double). I LOVE the foam one soo much sometimes I sneaky nap in there. When my boyf and I moved into our new house the king mattress was delayed so we bought the foam as a stop gap - and it's miles better.

Happy decorating :-D

Hi Holly,

really nice blog, my compliments!
I was wundering if you could help me? I'm desperately looking for a nice bed frame in Germany (Munich). Maybe you know some more (online)shops in Germany where I can buy a bed frame?
I looked through all your shopping-online-sites but most of them only offer bedclothes. Really liked a bed a found at Impressionen (cottage) but they only have it in grey :-(

Thank you so much in advance!

Keep up the good work with your blog!

Marijn
