{what's your style?}

I found this southern home in New Orleans on the House Beautiful website and fell so deeply in love. Of course it's wayyyy over the top and not at all how I could live but I love the femininity, mix of textures, lush silks, and the gorgeous palette of purple and blue. It's so SOUTHERN, it's like all those plantation homes I remember touring as a kid on school field trips. I grew up in South Carolina so I spent lots of time studying all that Classic, Georgian, and Greek Revival architecture. Transom windows make me drool. I adore ceiling medallions, crown moldings, ornate fireplace mantels (esp. 19th century french limestone, oh la la) -- architectural details like that take my breath away. Chandeliers, wide original wood floors, tile floors or marble... I love, love, love it all. As southern as I am, living in New England since I was 17-years-old has certainly had an influence on my interiors style. So I'm a southern girl with a bit of a northern twist. Plus I've always lived either directly on the beach with the sand in my backyard, across the street, or within a few miles drive. Mix in with that all my frequent adventures in London and Paris as a single girl (I've been to both destinations 15 times or more) and you can start to understand my style influences and why this particular home in House Beautiful is one I 'feel' in my heart when I look at it. Funny thing is, that although I connect with this style I couldn't live like this. I'm way too laid back and not as fussy. I love lots of pure white, space around objects, and I don't like my windows dressed quite so heavily. Shades or drapes but not both. This home is the south, meets France, meets London, and then gives a hug and a kiss to New York. The only thing it needs is something to make it feel a bit more coastal and laid back. A little less posh. More clean lines and less ornate curvy pieces. A few more geometric prints, maybe even some ethic style. I guess my ideal style is Sydney meets LA meets Savannah with a touch of Paris, a London kiss, and a wink at Sweden. Maybe even a cocktail with India. Sounds like I need medication, huh? So ethno-euro-coastal. I just laughed as I typed that. Yeah, that sounds more like a Holly home. Let me ask you, when you look at the homes and apartments that fill magazines and books, do you ask yourself WHY certain images draw you in and try to figure out where your style and likes come from exactly? It's really fun and a good exercise to try this if you haven't before. It's also a really good way to figure out what your personal style is. For instance, if I were to ask you, "Describe your personal style" can you do it easily or does it take a really long pause and lots of thought? If you have to really think about it this could be a bit of an issue for you. How? Well if you're in a store and you see something you think you love, you may buy it only to go home and realize you don't really like it or that it doesn't work with what you already have. If you know your personal style really, really well you can go into a store and just immediately pick out things you love that you'll bring home and love too. It's really that easy, there is no magic to it. To know thyself. This is how shopping can become a really fun adventure instead of a boring task as well. So try it, next time you see rooms you love -- ask yourself why, pick the room apart object by object, what is it that you like? Everything, one thing, five things? REALLY think about it. You can even start taking notes and see what recurring words or themes start to surface. I have a busy, big weekend ahead so I'll let you think this over. If you'd like to comment below with your style - a few sentences or less as it shouldn't be complicated - please do so. (images from house beautiful)

I love to mix up things. Combine vintage furniture with contemporary ones. Which is not an easy task. It should look like things were effortlessly thrown together but of course need to complement each other. It is important for me to find some unity and clarity in my invironment and not to get lost in the Parisian quirkiness. I love how you put your style into words. For me that would be euro/ethno with and American kiss. Since I have to come to appreciate the American southern style (after living 7 years in Dallas) wich seemed to me as an impossible thing beeing born and brought up in Europe. I specially miss the crown moldings back home in the new buildings. There is no such thing and therefore will allways miss the warmth it gives to a room.
I also do a lot of seasonal decoratng to bring some freshness into the home and to get a new perspective on things. I love to evolve my style and I am always on the lookout for a new treasure. Have a great weekend!

I think ideally I would live in a home that was shaped...by it's surroundings outdoors and by it's architectural details. Plain boxy spaces make me feel like I'm in a mental institution. I used to think I hated super modern looking furniture, but now really find peace in the modern lines. But I need some frills to balance it out, either in pattern or shapes elsewhere in the room. I think it's how I dress, too. Pared down with something unexpected here and there. I'm very into low maintenance things that let me not be afraid to make a mess, but that are also easy on the eye.

Although this does not represent my personal style, i admire the way the pieces were assembled. It does represent personal style and does not look cookie cutter. As a designer, I play sociologist, helping people find their personal style, which is often very different from what they thought they liked. The hardest part is helping them understand that personal style has no rules or boundaries. It is an expression of the way THEY want to live and not the personal style of the designer.

I refer to my style as Rustic * Western * Vintage... a 1000 degrees away from the images above. Except for the zebra hide in the first photo ~ the vintage maps in photo #3 ~ the BRIGHT turquoise in photos #4 & #5 ~ and
the complete juxtaposition of collections in the last picture is DEVINE... All further proof that style is not simply a matter of taste, but ultimately it's how a
selection of unique pieces are combined and presented, that defines each person's individual style.

Love those colors. I grew up in Germany where people (as you know!) typically have white walls. I always wanted color. Now I live in a beige canvass (rental apartment) and my choices are more limited and tones more muted. My style is easy to sum up though:

Quirky, cozy, personable, functional:

Arts and crafts, bungelow, anything early 1900's. Dark, deliberate, sinewy, organic. Retor sixties. And chic farmhouse. How the hell do you reconcile these? I'm not sure but when I find a house I'll give it my best.

I love your blog. You have an AMAZING grasp on all things Deco, zu Hause und Design. Bin neidig auf dein zweiteiliges Leben. ;) Bin Lehrerin an einer HS und mache alle 2 Jahre Austausch mit einem kleinen Dorf in der Nähe von K-Town. I get my Germany fix in shorter bursts now. But I will read your blog to stay up on the German style I miss!
I think you are right about the house, it's beautiful, but it makes me feel a little claustrophobic, I think rooms with a little less fuss seem to have more breathing room.
As far as my style goes, I know if I like something right away, but I never think about stuff in advance... which may explain why my apartment is a bit chaotic.

Amazing photos and post. And like most design + decor fans, I am an eclectic and drawn to many different lifestyles of decor. My true favs: Bohemian Chic, Gothic Grunge, Vanity Fair Vintage, Euro Modern, and then the "clean line girl" inside, loves some Urban Organic with Eco-friendly sensibility. ~s

cosy and casual with plenty of light and space, lots of white with pops of colour, clean lines and simple furniture broken up with highlights of pattern and texture, with a little nod to the cottage home of my childhood.

Great post! I started my blog a year ago for this very reason - to pull together all the styles i loved and it totally worked, i now know my style inside out :)

I'm drawn to white spaces, minimal clean lines mixed with retro and danish modern pieces, 60s/70s patterns and accessories with minimal colour. Just lots of simple retro/modern contrasting. It all makes me very happy!

Hi Holly, such an interesting post. Until I actually bought my own house just over a year or so ago I would have thought that my style was something different - much more colourful and patterned. But actually when it came down to thinking about what I actually wanted to live with has led to a much less fussy look - lots of white walls and small bits of bright colour here and there.

After reading you post I think I may have an interior identity crisis! Haha. I wouldn't even know where to begin describing my personal style ... it's a mish mash of everything. I only bought my own place a couple of years ago so hopefully my tastes will refine over the years :)

I am a huge fan of what I call the "southern living" home crossed with my New Orleans eclectic look and feel. I lived in south Louisiana until I was 25 and moved to NJ. I love porches and french doors, ceiling fans on the porch, transome windows, high ceilings and lots and lots of light. Now, I'm in a tiny studio and no one that I know who owns a home up here has a porch. It's so sad! lol
I wanted to write a note to let you know how much this posting inspired me to ponder, not only my personal decorating style, but also the style for my business. I’ve recently moved from Amsterdam to Berlin due to a transfer with my husband’s company and thus am relocating my business too. I’ve always called my business a “career in my suitcase” but this move is challenging me in many ways… since reading this particular posting I’ve started penning INSPIRATION words and phrases to my bulletin board – using them as indicators both personally and professionally. Last week, a friend, who also happens to run a marketing firm, visited me and over the course of the week we discussed how my business was changing due to the move. At the end of her stay, she complimented me on my ability to articulate my vision. And that’s when the topic of conversation turned to YOU – Haus Maus! This posting inspired me to think, to articulate my ideas, my personal style profile ponderings merged with my professional one and I find that I am closer to determining my next steps. I always enjoy your blog when I pop in, but this particular posting, has helped tremendously, encouraging me to think and to articulate in ways I usually don’t. Thanks for writing a great blog,
Yours,
Toma Haines

I really like your question,
"Describe your personal style".
It really helps me to focus.
I never thought about that when shopping. I thought it'd be better to follow my instincts but instincts are guided by my personal style.
So, I think my personal style
is simple (one main colour such as white) with a touch of bright colours here and there. It reminds me why I picked this pair of pumps I have.
I think every time I go shopping I'll think of this as a reference.
Thanks for this food for thought!

I am also a transplant from Germany and have been living in the States for many years, I feel here is a strong desire to be traditional, I feel this as a decorator very much, many of my client would never want to part with it. I think it translates in to security with the well known...
I love colors, I am a painter as well and would possibly describe my style as bohemian, I usually mix wildly, old (I do not have the money for antiques...)and new, modern and classic, found and natural, plants and flowers, make do with was is available, find things in strange places...oh well: In the end important is that I love it.
Lifestyle is an aspect too, some of my clients are empty nesters, some have more then one wild child and a dozen pets...
I do not like to create 'movie sets' for homes, it is simply not realistic, so often I walk in and will be confronted with things to work with, sometimes I like them, often I do not. And yet, I'll make it work. I see a wide gap between the fabulous magazine shots out there, which I love and the regular places I see as a decorator every day. Sure, I find my clients here
in a very affluent neighborhood, but I don't see often the desire for truly great design and a departure from safe choices.
It takes a great effort on both sides and trust and courage to get there.
I love your view on all thing you describe, stick to it, it's wonderful!
Viel Glueck!
Victoria
