{A Joyful Shutterbug}

Lately I've been trying to find some hobbies that will help me to step away from my normal work routine but yet every time I find a hobby I notice that it directly links to my work. I can't get away from work no matter how hard I try. What a battle! My current passion is photography. I'm trying to put an effort into learning about composition and lighting and it's mostly through trial and error as I hate how to manuals and learn best by jumping in head first. Here is some of my recent work. I will continue shooting, learning, and hopefully growing. Still life photography, self portraits, and nature photography seems to be my favorite though I really like to photograph people. The problem with people as a subject is that they run saying that they hate to have their photo taken so I have few willing subjects. I'll continue to post more here on haus maus if you'd like. I don't mind sharing them, I think it's a good exercise for me. It also makes me happy. Do you enjoy taking photos? What do you like to photograph? (images from holly becker)

I'm a terrible photographer, to my great chagrin.

I've always thought it's something I *should* be good at, but I just don't have it in me. I really struggled with this inadequacy in art school - I wanted so badly to take beautiful photos, but I just never have. At a certain point I decided just to use a camera for the sake of documentation, which is different.

I still get pangs of regret every time I look at Sandra's (Smosch) blog. Her photos are exactly the kind I've always envisioned being able to take! Street photography & elevation of the mundane through composition, color, and juxtaposition.

I'll just have to be okay being a designer, and let the photographers be photographers. :)

oh please!! the pics are really beautiful, i definately want to see more.....

as for what i like to photograph...i love taking pictures of wool, i don't know why, and clouds (ditto), anything against a white backdrop. i wish i was better at selfs...(-: enjoy your photos!
I love photography and I too learn by trial and error. I love photos of everyday random stuff, but especially anything have to do with crafting.
I am so glad to see your photographs! How beautiful! I really like the lighting you used...
I too really love photography and prefer landscapes... I like doing portraits but mainly just candids.
The only person in my house who doesn't hide when i grab my camera is my 9 month old so he is my main subject (aka. victim! LOL)
I hope you keep putting your photos on here...i really enjoy looking at other peoples work...it is so amazing how we all have the same eyes and yet SEE things so differently...

It's good to see a post! Your photos are good - keep showing them, please. And, I like the new look of Haus Maus...with your still life at the top. I'm not a good photographer, it is so difficult! I admire you for taking it on. Thanks for sharing.

At the end of January I decided to take a self-portrait every day. Of course I end up taking 10 or 15 to make sure I have a decent one. I really need the practice on human subjects because, like you, there aren't many willing ones. It's hard to find something new to 'say' every day, but I like the challenge.

I love taking pictures of plants and other things found in nature. I'm a trial-and-error person myself, although I've found online tutorials (by Googling things like 'photographing lunar eclipses' or 'photographing fireworks') to be helpful, as long as they're short, as I have a limited attention span for that sort of thing.

Hi Holly,
Yes please...post many!
i love taking photos and seem to be obsessed lately also. i "see" almost everything as a photo!
I do enjoy setting up mini vignettes or still life in the home,i love light and shadow, and clouds are a big obsession.
I have found that by taking photos, I am more grateful and appreciative of the world and of my little world within it. The beauty in the big picture and in the smaller picture. It helps me get out of myself...and sometimes i need to do that.
Thanks Holly for making me ponder~again~

I'm into fashion photography mostly.. I'm going to be trying my hand at architectural photography here in the next few weeks. I write for a modern design blog and we're interviewing some architects for some upcoming features. I'm hoping I do their fabulous projects justice!

Have a nice weekend.
Bye,
Marianne
Please keep sharing! The pictures are beautiful!

I love taking photographs, but I have to admit, mine are amateurish...sigh

These photos are fantastic!
You clearly have an eye for lighting and composition. Even more so, you have a talent for styling!

I think you should start thinking about selling print of your work.

I first have to say photography was a hobby I always dreamed of having, but, until the advent of the digital camera, wasn't something that seemed viable. Digital cameras give such instant results that you can learn so much faster.

So until I get a good digital camera (hopefully this year) I'm learning how to wrangle my cell phone camera to get around it's obvious limitations. I have a hard time with light. I do best with close-ups. I want to learn about composition. I really want Photoshop to play around with my results more, but am making do with the free Picasa software, which is actually pretty cool.

I definitely want to document my life, like what Anna was saying, but I really want to learn how to do it better. I come from a family who spends it's holidays looking at old photos, filmstrips, videos, etc. We love to document! And review. So I want to not only contribute to that, but do so in a beautiful way.

I've been wanting to learn how to be a better photographer of indoor still-lifes. Yours have a lovely warmth. Usually I just quickly dash off a picture as a record of something, as opposed to a piece in and of itself.

I tend to have to get out of the house and be looking at architecture, flowers, scenery, etc in order to put my "photography" hat on.

These are beautiful photos. You do an amazing job. Please keep sharing.

I love photography and keep working at it. I love taking pictures of nature, children, and macro. I struggle with good food pictures and still life's. I never feel like my house is clean enough to take those. Hazards of having two small children at home all the time I guess. :)

i love you photo's! I do like to take photographs but am not really good at it. I know i should practise more often problem is that i'm busy with two children who aren't willingly subjects ;) Maybe I should try more often to make (good) photographs of them, its really a shame that I don't actually, they grow up so fast!!

I love photographing my son and odd cropped compositions that leave you guessing. We purchased a Nikon D50 two years ago and I still need to watch the instruction video.

If you have a minute I would love some advice regarding finding chairs for our kitchen table (the Ikea docksta).

Is that the "sweater mug" from Starbucks?! If so, I have been coveting it for months! Lucky :)

I am truly impressed with these photos! They are so feminine, calm and beautiful... I really love them.

I am also interested in this kind of photography and wish I had more time to practice!

Hi Enna! Yes the deer painting is by Jennifer Davis, an artist here in America in the midwest. That is an original so there are no prints available but you can view her work here on etsy:

These are so beautiful! I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm teaching myself to take photos and I so want to be good at it, but I can't stand manuals or even how to guides. So I just keep working away on it. Your photos are already amazing. You've got a great eye.

These are so lovely Holly! I love photography and one of my goals too is to learn more about it. The problem here in Finland is that during the winter time there's so little natural light! I feel so happy that days are getting longer and sun is getting our more and more.

My favorite mug looks so cute in your photo. That would be the knitted cable mug from Starbucks, of course. LOVE IT. I envy your photography skills. My blog would look so much cuter with better photography! But I'd rather spend time decorating than behind a camera.
