{my thoughts on blog contests}

I know not everyone is all rainbows and Hello Kitty, but my goal is to start fresh today, this year, it's my resolve. I want to be more positive in 2009 than ever before in my life. At least after this post because it gets a little dark and negative so sorry for that. I truly want to start the new year off on a clean slate though so I think writing this post is good for me. Especially now that the period of sloth and indulgence has ended, it's good to be back on schedule and in the swing of life again, waking up at normal times and all. It's nice not to eat chocolate each day and bask in the glow of too much wine. It's wise to bring self control back in to your daily routine. And it's great to be back here with all of you on haus maus. I've missed you! So onto the dark part... Did you hear about the "Homies" competition over at the Apartment Therapy blog? I could stop right here because for those of you who know about it can guess what I'm about to say.... For those who don't know, it was this contest that AT decided to have where they asked readers what blogs they were reading. Out of the hundreds of nominations AT then took the 8 most mentioned blogs and put them together for a final judging where readers selected a favorite blog. I was one of those 8 and felt really flattered initially. The judging was a little hard if you are like me and happened to like 2 or 3 of them equally -- it did not matter -- you had to vote for only one. During the voting process, comments started flying in and at first were supportive. I optimistically thought, "Oh this will be an innocent little discussion" because let's face it the topic is design blogging, how bloody could it get? I see design blogging right up there with blogs about crafts and puppies, most people reading them (I had assumed at least) were pretty supportive appreciative people who valued the blogging community for what it was and all of the free fantastic content posted online each day for their reading pleasure, completely free of charge and did I mention free? Yes I say this with a 'tude. I have crazy tone in my voice right now. Anyway, the comments were horrible. No appreciation whatsoever, most of them were way off base. This nasty bashing of the blogs turned my stomach. Those in the contest, including me, took a beating, some more than others (I was mentioned only twice I think)... but it made me upset because I have not and will not go in any public forum, blog, website, whatever, either as myself or under some anonymous handle to belittle others and their work. My philosophy has and always will be to keep the negative off of the net. We have too much crap to handle in our everyday life. Most of us come to the web for entertainment, whether it's good or not so good is up to us. I tend to gravitate towards positive websites (Cute Overload!) and blogs and though I do read Dooce and Perez Hilton from time to time and think The Onion and The New York Times can provide a measure of shock value and negative entertainment, I like them but this is why: They do not feel like they are attacking anyone to me. I think all of the celebs being raked over on Perez's blog genuinely enjoy it and the press in general because his blog is THE gossip site and if you are NOT on it (according to Hollywood anyway) then you are NOT in the spotlight and you are no one. The goal is to be on Perez Hilton for the most part, whether he features you with white dots on your chin or not, no one really cares. It's press and Hollywood knows all press is good press. Dooce is more or less the same in a way because the people she talks about and makes fun of are those in her family and given that she loves them, they love here, and she buys them a lot of pretty things from her blog income, I think they're all cool with her talking about their flatulence problems. And she rocks! (okay during the campaign she did go off a little on Mz. Palin but that's different, again it's a celebrity more-or-less). If Dooce starting going after people though, average people out there that are trying to do good work and make an honest living, I'd stop laughing and I'd avoid tuning in. So that's what I mean when I say I avoid negative stuff online and stick to either what's positive or what I view as not directly impacting someone else's life in a negative way. But when I read that whole comments thread on AT where random readers, most who registered same day to leave those comments, were taking a giant pee pee on nearly everyone nominated, I was disturbed by it. Very. Disturbed. And I really wanted to see THEIR BLOGS so I could go see what BLOG PERFECTION looked like. The perfection they all thought we apparently were not meeting. Maybe if they have the perfect recipe for the perfect design blog they should take all that wind and sail with it to building the best damn blog on earth. Tone. I know. Tone. Sorry. Like most of you, I started surfing the web years ago because it was fascinating. My first email program was Lotus cc:mail and I remember the days pre-Google, pre-blogs, heck pre-webstores and pre-eBay. I came to the web time and time again to unearth gems, to find the good because I felt like in my normal "real world" life I was seeing way to many bads things happening and I needed some kind of escape. I'm not a big television person so the internet was perfect, one big space where thoughts and images met and life happened in new ways. Back then, I needed to find a place where I could find like-minded people who were also sick of the regular mundane routine and wanted more out of life. I was raised on the beach in a resort community in South Carolina, I didn't grow up with exposure to tons of culture and new ideas. You know how nowadays if we want culture we can go to a million websites to find it and learn. Back when I was growing up (no net) culture was going to the history museum 2 hours away or over to the Chinese buffet on Saturday (haute culture). Over the years of being online and now being here as a voice, a blogger, I can't tell you how much it means to me to have the online world but also to meet people here, be inspired, and to learn. I also appreciate when kindness is shown just as in real life. I'm Holly here and I'm the same Holly in the real world. For those of you who are reading and have met me, you know this. But that whole nasty comments thread over on that contest post was not kind. I rarely get angry, but I felt my pulse race because I believe that a blog cannot be weighed by importance or content or anything else as I think blogging has to do with being authentic and true and showing up here as often as you can to show the parts of your life that you feel like sharing. No single reader has the right to say, "She talks too much about being pregnant", or "I don't like her blog because she talks about her dogs more than a design blog should". Not that these are direct quotes from that whole AT thing but more or less this is the ammunition that people brought into that heat-filled space and it was pretty ugly over there. When I woke up on January 2nd excited to map out my goals for the new year and then read that I wanted to stop blogging altogether. I honestly considered dumping this blog and decor8 and not bothering to show up here each day. Like screw it. I know how stupid this way of thinking was and I would not give up decor8 but still... I allowed myself to get that upset. You know, that "screw it all" feeling you sometimes have when people act like what you and those you work with are not doing meaningful work. Doctors feel this way when a patient dies on their table (I know, my uncle is a surgeon). You don't think of those you save, you think of those you did not save. So it's the same as a blogger. You don't focus on the thousands who love you, you tend to focus on the 10 that said hateful heated nonsense about you. WHY IS THAT? I'd like to ask you a question before I officially close my mouth because ultimately I'm hoping you will comment and let me know your thoughts on this topic. Where would you be without design blogs? If there was no place to go on the web where individuals were posting about their homes, their favorite finds, things that inspire them? You know not too many years ago none of us could go on the web and find a design blog and I want you to think about that time for a moment. We sometimes get so caught up in this whirlwind "more more more" lifestyle we've been fed but really, think about it... What would it be like if you had only eBay and shopping websites and no blogs at all talking about anything arts or crafts related. No design blogs. No crafty blogs. Nada. It would suck it, right? I think that those who posted in that "Homies" thread should step out of their own heads for a moment and think about this the next time they try to judge a blog or weigh the value of a blog based on how many posts they write daily or how many nifty design tips they can throw out there. A blog belongs to the person authoring it and that person can write whatever they want. End of discussion. Or so you'd think. But of course you always have a handful who really want to argue this and critique blogs and enter them into contests to see "Who's Best". Who CARES WHO IS BEST? That is so high school. That is so "Best Dressed" "Most Liked" "Prettiest"... It didn't work in high school for anyone except for the winner and when it comes to contests there can only be ONE winner. After the whole AT "Homies" experience I have made a personal vow. I will no longer participate in blog contests putting blog against blog. I'm done with it. It's just another way for people to walk away feeling like a loser if they do not win and I never want to support that. Ever. Yay to AT for trying though. And yes I lost the contest. I was in the final 8 so I guess that means something but yes I lost and absolutely expected to and wanted to because once it got nasty I just wanted out. But that isn't why I felt upset then or even slightly annoyed up until last night. I didn't care so much if I lose or win a blog contest because once I was in the final 8 I was so flattered that I felt I had won in a sense. I wanted people to vote though and asked my Facebook contacts to vote, but I did not say for me or anything like that, I just said to go over to AT and vote for the blog you like best. I felt upset because people got hurt in that whole contest and that's sad. Most of us blog to record our thoughts and talk to people and connect and build bridges and motivate others. The blog that everyone knew would win, did anyway so I am not sure what the point was in the end because AT obviously knew who would win as in the end they more or less admitted to that fact. I guess they wanted to just see who are currently the "it" bloggers, I don't know, but I won't assume because it's not my place. I am grateful to AT for writing about me back in 2006 and I will always respect them for that first of many blog mentions on their site because it helped me to build decor8 when other equally strong blogs refused to write about me. So AT is good people. So peeps, what do you think of blog contests? I told you what I think...

As a voter, I had no idea that people were being so ugly and hateful. I'm so sorry that you were exposed to that....It's sort of light entering into a beauty contest. All the ugly people want to tear you down and point out any real or imagined flaws to make themselves feel better. Hopefully, at the very least, your site got some positive press out of it and more APPRECIATIVE people found out about your amazing site and became fans. Hugs to you...You AND your site ROCK. Period.

the contest itself is great I think!
Here is the main thing to think about when you read negative remarks by random strangers is this- every single good person reads those same negative remarks and recoils not from the object of the rant but rather from the ignorance of the writer. seriously, whenever I read something rude or negative directed at someone else I ALWAYS ask myself "why would I trust this angry individuals opinion?". and I don't. The contest is great because no publicity is bad publicity. the folks at AT are good people. we all know that.
The greatest thing I have learned in my 40 years on earth is "give praise freely". You are a good person and all those other bloggers are also good people. The angry and rude people I forgive already as I know they have simply not found happiness enough yet in life to "give praise freely".

oh and the shorten version of my long letter is:
"ask yourself, what would the Dalai Lama do?"

I think people are under the assumption that the "big bloggers" are very successful and making lots of money from their blogs, and even though blogs are free to read, for some reason, as we see in Hollywood all the time, once people have that perception, their next goal becomes to tear them down. It's rather sick. Even though most bloggers, even the one who won the AT contest, has publically said many times that she doesn't earn a living from her blog, people have this impression, therefore feel they have the right to say whatever apparently (even if a blogger does make $$ from their blogs, props to them! unless you're paying for the content, you don't have a right to complain. just step away from the blog).

I know I can't believe the comments I read online sometimes - mediabistro is full of vitriol on their boards for instance. It's shocking. I liken it to road rage. For some reason, people turn into different people once they're behind the wheel - same with the commenters online.

That said, I do think contests are good becasue most people probably have only ever heard of d*s or decor8, but not the other blogs nominated. So, in the spirit of trying to foster and highlight new talent, that's good. And I think competition is healthy too, it makes us all strive to be better. But people need to get a reality check and realize most blogs are done out of passion, are not that profitable and if they don't like them, then to simply not read them. Leave the bitterness for your therapist, haters!

As my brother-in-law likes to say 'Why hate? Congratulate.' ;)

I saw a small portion of the harsh comments on AT...mostly because after reading a few I just stopped. Who has time for such negative nonsense? I think people who leave negative, accusatory, harsh comments have too much time on their hands. If you don't like a blog, by all means don't read it, but you don't need to rip it to shreads. It is an expression of a person and their life. The negative commenter has not walked in that blogger's shoes and really aught not judge how they choose to express themselves via their blog.
As for blog contests, I think their existence is fine. On a site like AT hopefully it exposes AT readers to sites they might not have known about. When it turns into a forum for negativity that's a problem.
To the negative commenters out there, I think the universe has a way of giving back to you what you send out. I, for one, adore it when people post about their dogs...I post about mine too!

Holly, I'm sure this easier said than done for you but do not let that crap get to you! I have been reading your blog for about 2 years I guess? now because I like it. You did not LOSE that stupid contest. It's awesome that you're well enough known to even be nominated. I think people get negative because they are too caught up in their own crap/it's easier to critique someone else than to put themselves out there. I am sorry I did not vote for you as my favorite, I wish I would have now, I remember you mentioning it but honestly I don't have time to follow all the links out there (well for my own sanity I have to limit it!) and so of course I didn't read all the crazy comments. I'm sorry something that was meant to be good turned mean. I appreciate that you and your blog stay positive. For me, that's really important, to stay positive and focus on the good and not the negative in life (it's why I don't watch the news a lot!). I have felt encouraged in the past reading posts you've written on business, helping each other, creativity, etc. especially when I have been going through a patch of "I'm not good enough/creative enough/whatever". I know I'm not the only one you help this way too. Your love for what you blog about shines through and you do a great job at it, that is all that matters! If people want to get crazy about something like that, let them that is their problem. It is not yours. At the end of the day you are doing what you are meant to be doing, doing it well and helping others along the way. That is a winner in my book. ;)

Wow. I had no idea there was blog bashing going on in the AT contest. I made my vote (for you... shhhh) and didn't look back. I think it's ridiculous that people feel the freedom to be so horrible and hateful on the internet when they would never consider saying those things to someone's face. And why is there even a need to bash in a contest like that? It doesn't change the votes. Somewhere along the world wide web line people started to feel certain freedoms of speech that are not tasteful, constructive, or kind and all of the bitter people out there are using the internet as their outlet. I'm sorry that it has to be like that and I'm not convinced it does have to be like that. Unfortunately, we can only be responsible for ourselves and hope that as we share love and kindness, others may realize what a small life they lead.

You're right that there needs to be a little perspective here. Blogs are conversations and conversations are best when they are civil. I'm very thankful for the fun and inspiration of design blogs, including yours. The best byproduct of the contest was the great list of links of design blogs that I'll be clicking for weeks!

A big problem with being "anonymous" is that people say mean hurtful things that they wouldn't dare say to someone's face. I don't really understand the need for contests though. I've found a few blogs because of contests, but otherwise it's always the same blogs winning. What's the point? It's got to be hard when bloggers take the extra step and share bits or themselves and their lives and then people just bash them for no reason. One of the main reasons why I've been reluctant to share too much, but I love it when other bloggers do.

Just last night I was talking with another blogger at how blogging was such a great escape and has always been so supportive and motivating to sit at the computer and put your self out there. I have not found the negative until now reading about this contest. I am sorry you had to go through that.
First I agree, everyone is unique on here and with that there really cannot be a place to judge who is better than anyone else. There are no rules.
I just don't understand the hatred and negativity, if you do not like something move on, why do people feel the need to be uncivil and hurt others feelings. Again it becomes high school like in that fact to make themselves feel stronger or better.
And you are so right we do this for our selves, our own time to hopefully inspire others and to be inspired.
For example when I first found your wonderful blog, you inspired me to get back into my design passions, which I am so grateful for, and then you followed your dream to set up a home overseas, which motivates me to know it is possible.

I do not know why we all focus on that one negative over the many positives, it always effects us. But I definitely want to let you know that I appreciate all that you do with both of your fabulous blogs. I will always be a faithful reader.

Oh WOW. You rock my world!

I missed all the nastiness at AT, and I am glad becuase I often get quite distressed reading that sort of thing. When it happens on my favorite forum I get anxious too!

So... I love blogs...lots of them...very much! They make me feel at home, and normal. I have been inspired, laughed, been brought to tears, touched by many of the things I have read on blogs.

I felt relieved when I found interiors blogs, to learn I was not wierd because I love cushions...A LOT. That making the contents of your pantry beautiful was normal for some people. That having a beautiful house was possible without having millions of dollars.

Contests schmontests. Who cares who is 'best'. Blurgh, such a dumb word 'best'. Its non-applicable. I love lots of blogs because they are fabulous and the wonderful people who write them are willing to share their lives with everyone out there in the world. I feel lucky that they want to share with me. Everyone should feel lucky.

Again, you rock! Oh, and my new years resolution is to start a blog about the reno's to our new home!

hello holly. i couldn't agree more, and when i ever see that happening on blogs (the negativity) i generally never return to them. i think because so many people are turning away from mags, tv, newspapers, etc, blogs are becoming more important (or more a regular part) in people's lives they get too judgemental and caught up in them and forget that they attacking a person not a company.

keep doing what you do. i really enjoy your blog.

Holly,

I really could not have said it any better. Something that starts out as a bit of 'innocent fun' turns ugly and pretty much ruins it for everyone. I've never understood the people that leave comments like that, that essentially think bloggers are a bunch of monkeys that dance on command and get beaten if they don't perform. It's shameful, really. On a more positive note, I truly am appreciative of all the time and effort you and other bloggers put into your blogs. I look forward to reading and discovering new things through other people's blogs every day. I may not always think something is as awesome as someone else, but that's called personal taste and that's what makes it interesting! So please don't get discouraged by all the negativity! You're doing the design and blogging communities a great service, and I for one and thankful for that!

I like blog contests because I get to expand my blogging horizon. One blog always leads to another, and there are an infinite number of people out there with an infinite number of new and beautiful ideas.

My husband and I had money and presents stolen from our wedding reception a few months ago and the local news did an article about it which they posted online. I think about 50 or so people commented on it and all of them were bashing me and my husband, saying it was our fault and blah blah blah. I was originally offended because I'd never been under that sort of attack online. Its a sick feeling and I'm sorry for anyone who has to deal with it, especially you because you have a wonderful blog. Eventually I realized the same as you did, it had nothing to do with me. That's just what those people enjoy doing.

In the words of 3LW: "Playas are gonna play and hata's are gonna hate...that ain't got nothin to do with me and you."

Chin up!

First of all, I love your blog. I also like most of the other blogs in the Homies competition. I am also one of those souls who use the Internet primarily for making themselves feel more positive, find inspiration, or creative ideas, or simply spend some time away from everyday trouble. I could never ever understand people who leave negative comments as a way to vent their inferiority complex issues on people who are better than them. That's how I see it is. I come from a culture where people easily hurt others, using hostile behavior and harsh words on a daily basis, both in real life and on the Internet. To hell with them. There are many others who appreciate good things, so keep it up! We are on your side.

Love love love your blogs... so happy you didn't say screw it! You came back to us. And we love you for it. Here's to a positive and snark-free 2009!

Holly, you are a wonderful and inspirational person and it makes me sad to see that this has had such a negative impact on you. I agree with you completely- blogging contests are almost like asking "who is the best at living" or "who has the best personality." We can't determine those things nor should attempt to. Please remember that you can not control other individuals thoughts or actions so you should not put weight on things you can't control.
My friend sent me this quote today because I was having a poopy day and I believe it applies.

"It’s good to remind myself when I’m having a crisis of purpose and feeling useless that at least I can make something beautiful." - Andrew Bird

What you are doing is beautiful and that's all that matters. If others can't appreciate the beauty you create, its their loss. If you are happy and helping, its all that matters.

PS- I love the "giant pee pee" comment. :)

you said it so well, holly! and please don't even think of quitting your blogs! you are right, life wouldn't be the same without art-craft-design blogs.
something similar happened to me, but in a much smaller scale. i was asked by AT if they could post a garland i had made for my daughter's room and, of course i said yes. it is the second time something i made is featured there and i was really flattered. but then the comments...not so flattering. some were nice, but some were really harsh. i got some exposure {but not that much} and i don't know if that is worth putting my work out there and have it trashed, mostly because i didn't make it to sell, it was just something i made for my house, not trying to please anyone but my family.
i would much rather stay in the positive side of blogging.
decor8 is a winner in my book, i read it every day!

I'm not a fan of the contest thing - I think at the very heart of it, it's a little elitest, isn't that the whole point? It shouldn't be that way but, people get so sensitive, and it's not 'business' you know? So most people don't have the 'skin' to not be hurt. I don't know if that makes sense...

I'm so sorry about your experience - I adore your blog, and I really enjoy how your passion never get mixed up with ego. That's actually pretty rare when someone is as good as you are at design.

Anyways, I kinda giggled when you referred to the craft world....I'm a big scrapbooker, and you can't believe the viscious, bitchy things I've seen - it's unbelievable. I just stay out of it and keep doing what I do. I hope you do too, I know so many people love keeping up with you here on your little blog.

peace xo

Hi Holly,

I voted, but didn't know about the "nastiness" until I saw the post on Door 16's blog. I read 7 out of the 8 blogs nominated and I love all 7! I was so happy when AT disabled the comment for that post and explained.
Please keep doing what you are doing, because reading design blogs are the HIGHLIGHT of my day!!! Blogging daily is hard enough (I know because I have my own blog that I "rant" about family, work, etc.) let alone blogging meaningful good reads daily!
Can't wait to see all the cool ideas you come up with in 2009! =)

i come off way too opinionated and harsh in person and online. its a constant struggle for me to present myself in the manner i hope to convey to others.

i care about people so much, and am devoted to them so entirely - it hurts when i'm so misunderstood.

i would love to be a more prominent voice on the internet, but honestly, i'm just scared. i've been shot down so many times by my friends and family and also my coworkers and professors - its hard to have the courage to stand up and say "Hey look at me! Over here! I doing something interesting!!"

I give you credit. I hope one day I have the strength and determination to overcome my fears and share a little bit more of myself.

Right now - I'm sticking mostly to my etsy shop. The worst thing that can happen there is that someone won't want to buy my things and I'll never know they even thought that.

Thank you for all that you do, Holly, it means so much to so many of us - especially those of us who don't have a voice to be heard.

Wow - I had no idea all the negativity was going on. I get the AT feed, but I was actually ignoring the Homies posts because it just didn't interest me. I read what I like in blogs and just like you, I like positive and creative blogs. I seem to recall other instances of nasty commenters on AT before but I rarely read their comments on AT because of this, while on other positive and creative blogs I enjoy reading the comments and it feels like a supportive and polite community. I think that's something many of us are looking for these days.

I am from the sewing blog-world, but I come over into the design neighborhood to visit. I have a few favorites that I read often (here I am!) and I check AT often, too. I am frequently, horrified at the comments. We don't have this nastiness in the little sewing neighborhood. So it is sad to see, very sad to read the mean-spirited comments. I have wondered why it's like that. You are so right- there was nothing good to read or look at until just the last few years. Sometimes, it seems to me that is is the younger (perhaps less mature folk) who take it for granted.

At any rate, Holly, you are a wonderful writer and you bring such loveliness to light and I always look forward to your posts. I would surely miss you if you stopped. Thanks for all your hard work!

As a Creative Director, I started thinking about my research about 2-3 years ago and it definitely did not includes blogs. Now, as I research projects and try to stay personally creatively motivated, I do not know what I would do without blogs. Contests are interesting, but yes negativity is unnecessary. I love your blog, and those that do not are jealous. Or, possibly they have nothing better to do with their time but hide behind words.

i've had bad experiences with a.t. and try to take everything with a grain of salt.
my mother always says that if you don't have people saying bad things about you, then you aren't living your best life. in this case, i'd agree...so keep on doing well for yourself and forget the haters. you've got good things going for you now and even more in your future and people are jealous. i think.
good luck holly and thanks for the honest post!

Holly, sorry you (and others) experienced such a downer on the AT thing - there is a negative presence there sometimes - call it grumpy maybe - but there are a lot of positive, thoughtful presences as well.

I followed the voting daily, and added to my reading list several blogs that I had not known about in the process.

Blogging is a VERY personal and subjective thing, both for the blogger and the reader. There needs to be a "match" on some level to result in a visit or not-visit, and that's as it should be.

You have a great "voice"- I like that you are true to yourself and I like your ethic and enthusiasm and interested-ness!

Are our tastes in decor similar? Nope! But I have learned from you and can appreciate and respect yours as well as mine.

All of us would be so much poorer should blogging go away.

Best!

Obviously you (and the entire world) already know how I feel about the whole thing, but thank you SO MUCH for taking the time and having the guts to write all of this. You're a hero to me, Holly. Really. I know how draining it is to put all of this out there; to say something instead of being quiet. You are so good at expressing what I'm sure a lot of people feel when it comes to being judged in any capacity, on or off the internet.

I feel so embarrassed for being a runner-up, to be totally honest. I hate that I wasn't allowed to withdraw from the contest. I didn't press the issue after Maxwell told me he couldn't take me out, but it makes me angry. I was OK with it at first because, like you, I thought it would be innocuous fun. Little did I know. (And really, I should have known. I feel stupid now; I guess I was on a post-holiday high.)

I think it's very telling that there were HUNDREDS of comments every which way on the nominations and during the voting period, but there are less than a dozen in response to the actual winners (and half of them are from nominees!). What does that say about the whole thing?

Ugh. Anyway, Holly, I'm really glad you're not packing it all in, and I hope this whole experience ultimately turns out to be a positive thing in terms of the communication it opened up.

Here's to focusing on the thousands of people who love us. ;)

Holly, your blog is great! Don't let those negative comments get you down!

There are just some people out there that are angry bullies - just today I was next to a guy in traffic who was honking and yelling, even though we all were stuck behind the same train! Those people who troll internet forums and leave nasty comments are just the same.

Keep up the great work - Decor8 helps me escape and dream about decorating while I'm at work :)

I also voted in that contest. Had such a hard time to figure out who to vote for. It was after I started reading the comments. But I stopped soon again, sad and shocked of what I read. And I haven't even tried to find out who won, I don't care. For me all you 8 bloggers are winners. I too read more then one of those blogs and couldn't believe what people was writing about the bloggers. I love, and get really inspired, by reading blogs although I don't comment a lot. What I also wonder is why does negative people even bother reading these blogs if they think so negative about them? What does that say about themselfs?

It is only small people who tries to kick other people down to feel good themself. And the more they kick, the smaller they become. Sad, really.

Keep up the good work Holly! Don't let them kick you down! You are an inspiration for many many readers!

I didn't vote. And I will not ever vote. I promoted Home Rejuvenation's contest last year because I felt like I would be supporting the blog community. But I am still unsure why we need to vote on the best design blog.
Every blog I read is so unique to each person that I find it really hard to come to a determination on which is the best or even more personally which is my favorite. One day blog A is my fav and the next day blog B is. Just depends on my mood and what I want to read that day. For me it's not apples to apples. I have found other more productive ways to feel like I am supportive of the large blog community whether design or otherwise by leaving pertinent comments, sending emails if warranted and supporting artists work.
I am so thankful for all of the blogs out there. I have little time to surf the internet for the latest...whatever...and the blogs I read do much of the surfing for me. But I always remember that there is a person behind it and it is there own blog so if they want to talk about their pregnancy or dogs that is their choice. If I don't feel like hearing about it I click to the next blog and come back another day. That is the beauty of having the number of blogs out there that we do. You can find so many different people talking about every possible topic even just within design and each is so different. No two blogs or people offer the same perspective even on a throw pillow. My blog reader is constantly changing and will always be. I have a few blogs that I have read from the beginning and love discovering new ones.
Holly, I have read yours from the beginning and will continue to. You have a good eye and always show me something new. You are positive but are not afraid to confront important issues when it is appropriate and I appreciate that.
I think we should stop voting for the best (or our favorite) blog(s) and just show support for the ones we read by commenting in a constructive way.
I voted in the contest -- didn't read the contest so I didn't know what I was participating in! Goodness...that's so stupid! Especially for something like design that is so -- well friendly and happy!!! I'm not a designer, but I read design blogs because you are all so happy and like "look at this new picture, isn't life wonderful" and I always read those blogs at work and think "yeah, life is wonderful, I should buy a picture for my cubicle."

I started my blog because I needed/wanted an outlet to share my passion for design. I'm not here to bash anyone, and if anyone is, then I want no part of them.

Holly, you've mentioned in other posts that the best thing about blogging about design is the supportive community that comes along with it, which is 2000% true.

So a few random people registered with AT, and decided to bash a few blogs....they obviously have no idea what they're talking about, and not worth the effort either.

The same people that bashed our fellow bloggers probably have absolutely NO idea how much they've pi##ed off this wonderful community as they don't read them on a regular basis to begin with.

Bollocks to them. So there.

Hmm. Now I feel better. lol.
Annie May said…
You know what I have to say about the blog bashers...it's not your problem, it's theirs. I mean seriously could you imagine holding that much hate and anger inside that you feel like you'd have to go spew it out anonymously and bash someone who is doing an amazing thing for the design community. Not all blogs are great everyday, fine...that's just the way it is. What I love about your blog is that you are constantly referencing other bloggers and have exposed to me to so many other sites and blogs. If I'm not interested in something, I skip over it. I don't burn inside. Blogs are such an inspiration to me and I don't know what I'd do without them! Thank you so much for inspiring each and every day!

When I voted I didn't read people's comments. I had no idea, that some of them were this nasty.I can't believe you were actually considering giving up decor8! There will always be nasty people, who just won't get along, and unfortunately you can't change that.... You have a strong following, readers who are eager to see your postings every day! Just try to look past the idiots and keep writing your blog for us, who love it and appreciate it!
Yes Holly, we want you to write your design blog! :-)

I was on my honeymoon during the Homies. I didn't read the posts or vote and I probably wouldn't have. I am really disappointed that the comments that have driven some bloggers to consider throwing in the towel. In this economy, magazines have been shuttered left and right. I rely on magazines and blogs to inspire me in both my home design and my career {I'm a graphic designer}. I am so upset at the closing of many of my favorite magazines in the past year, and I would be seriously unnerved if my favorite design and home blogs did the same. Most bloggers write and share with us because it is what they love; not because they are rolling in cash from their ad revenue. Which even the very well-known bloogers can't be making that much, because even dooce's Heather Armstrong and her husband still do other work. She just published a book and I think he still does web and print design.

Anyhow, I sure hope these encouraging comments continue to cement your passion for design and blogging. As an Air Force wife who works from home and doesn't have a lot of friends interested in home design, crafting, etc. I would be lost without blogs like yours. Especially haus maus, I have really enjoyed watching your home in Germany come together!

Thanks, Holly! Here's to a fabulous 2009!

The wonder of blogging and the web is that it exposes you to the masses...the downside is that it exposes you to the masses. Ex: It used to be unusual to be green - now it's trendy. People will gladly line up and buy overpriced (but eco friendly!) water bottles at Pottery Barn because it is the trendy thing to do. Where am I going with this? Those same people are finding out about great sites like AT, decor8, and this one. They don't craft, they don't design, they don't blog, but they sure like to offer up opinions.

The bottom line is that you are absolutely correct. People who complain about things they get to read and enjoy for free are a bore. You, however, are a joy! I come to this blog because it is pleasing to look at, I like what is on it, and it makes me happy to be here. If ever there is a time I grow tired of it (doubt it!), you have my word that I will not complain, but rather, exercise my power to...wait for it...UNSUBSCRIBE!

haha :) Thank you for this cheerful, pretty, and interesting site! Mwah!
I could care less about blog contests ....and I know what its like to have comments being posted with mean things. I get them every now and then on my blog, that is why I started checking comments before having them posted. Its sickening and I always feel its other bloggers out there who are JEALOUS of any little success you or I or others have acquired and so they do these things in retribution. Notice that MOST of those people doing that, usually EVER leave a trace back to themselves? No email, no blog, NO nothing....

You have a right to vent, we ALL have feelings and we all bleed....so I'm glad you didnt hold anything back. : ) Shows your a real person.

Just wanted to say Haus Maus is my favorite blog to read and your insights are always fun and wonderful...thank you for putting yourself out there...and don't let the bad guys get you down!
YOU ARE AWESOME!
How terrible! I'm with you, I thought blogs were all about fun and happiness. I just didn't think that kind of hate existed for the craft/decorating blogs. That is just sad. I'm glad you didn't decide to stop blogging. I ready the decor8 blog occationally, but I love this blog and would miss it. Its hard not to be upset by something like this, but I guess you have to try and brush it off. Those that made rude comments were hiding and their opinion doesn't really matter if that's how they are going to be about it. As for "talking too much" about something or other, that's not for them to decide. It's someones personal blog. They are free to talk about whatever they choose. No one is forced to read it and no one is paying to read it.

Apartment Therapy has some of the nastiest, most spiteful, and purposefully mean commenters on the internet. Seriously, go to any AT post and watch people leap in to say what they hate about it. I'm sure these people are sitting in the middle of an empty white room with their laptop, because they hate EVERYTHING - never seen it before: hate it. Seen it before: everyone has it, boring, hate it. Trend in England: can't buy it in the USA, meaningless to me, hate it. They are just SO UNHAPPY.

Ignore them. They hate everyone. And deer. They particularly hate deer.

Even though I already said a "few things" on Facebook before I read this post I do want to express myself again on this marvelous blog that like many others brings me so much joy! For personal reasons I am in Belgium for the moment, that means less access to magazines, design events and so forth. When I had to be here years ago, I found myself in the same situation and I felt very isolated! So I for one can say that I love the blogging world and I have become totally addicted to my 50+ bookmarked blogs, Facebook and Perez! ha ha!

Having access to all those blogs and peoples ideas makes me feel that even when I am not in the epicenter of the "happenings" I am still part of it all and I am so grateful for that. I look through the blog pages and always drag pictures over into my "Inspiration Folder" and yes as you say "for free". People very often forget how much research it takes you bloggers to find the best articles, to find the things that are unique - having access to those blogs and being part of this era is such a wonderful thing to be grateful for.

You know what...there will always be "lovahs" and there will always be "hatehs" - let's be the lovah's that we are :). You have a great website Holly and for you to have the "forget it" thought was normal but it would make me really sad not to have your cute, colorful, inspirational images and comments be part of my life anymore, so let's forget that thought :) THANK YOU for putting yourself out there, for taking chances, for sharing your personal and also vulnerable experiences and be such an inspiration to so many of us! You rock!!!!

I am so glad that you took to the time for these words. It kind of cleans the air (you know like after a thunderstorm). I just started reading design blogs last month and they have already become an integral part of my life. All the things that were dragged through the mud in the commentary are exactly why I think your blog (and DoorSixteen, Making it Lovely etc.) are so right on. Design isn't just about that fabulous chair, color or sofa. It is about people and life. I hope (there is that word) that dumping your blog(s) never had to cross your mind again.

I think design blogs in the context of the author are far more interesting- I like to know about who is writing, what motivates them, and why. Design blog chronicling pregnancy & pets are much better reads and keep me coming back because I can identify with the author. Anyone can just post a selection a pictures but the voice of the person behind them is what draws an audience. So keep on what you are doing and please don't de-personalize!

hello holly,
i am sorry to hear that something which meant to be good turned so bad. but you and all the others dont have to worry, because what we all love is that ther are real people behind the blogs we love so much. i had a blog (more a diary) before i startet my "design" blog so i kinda knew what this feels like. and i know its hard work and i really, really appreciate your hard work!dont let the bad go in your heart-you dont need them. they have no idea whatsoever! i love your work, your blog(s) and you as a person. you are an inspiration to all of us.
but i agree that this medium allows a lot of people to be brutal and insensitive and stuff like that because they think here it is"free" to do so. they have no manners thats all. ;-)

When someone says or writes something negative, it says NOTHING about the person or thing that they are writing or speaking about; it speaks ONLY of the source. Some people have way too much time on their hands and can only make themselves feel better by bringing the world around them down. Pitiful behavior. Let it roll right off your back and keep doing what you do soooo very well! I enjoy your blog immensely! PJ

I have to say, AT commenters have always seemed particularly harsh. I was a reader of AT long before I signed up to be able to comment, and still I am very careful what I say. The few times I have commented, I have definitely been bashed and made to feel stupid. That's why I limit my AT time to mostly just reading the posts themselves, and only getting more "personal" with blogs like yours.

You know, one thing I learned after many years on the internet is that people will pick a fight over ANYTHING. I've seen scrapbooking communities with the meanest comments you could imagine. Nothing is harmless, wholesome or fluffy enough. Forum wars can erupt over cake frosting, stitch patterns or vegan recipes, trust me.

It saddens me, Holly. I enjoy the content on AT. I have to admit that I refrained a couple of times from commenting because of negative comments that were posted simply I do not want to be associated with trolls. As a group, we must remember how lucky we are to be surrounded by wonderful bloggers from which we get inspirations.

This unfortunate event inspired to share my thoughts on my new blog about social media. If you wish to read it http://tinyurl.com/958koe

I think it is sad that people hide behind their made-up names and spout off nastiness for no reason. Unfortunately I have seen it more than once on AT and I admit, it bothers me.

My best guess for a reason is that they have forgotten that the rest of the world is entitled to their opinions - whether we like it or not. I think the world of Ipods, laptops etc have brought us to a very individualized space - we don't have to share any more.

Just think, you never have to listen to a song that you don't like on the radio - ever again. But the big problem with all this individualism is you never find anything new. The radio exposed us to something we haven't heard before.

I guess I treat the web as a place to experience the new. There is alway something wonderful to be discovered, but you have to sift through the junk to find the gem! Just like an antique shop - there is all kinds of good stuff - you just need to find it!!!

Don't get too discouraged - just remember it always seems like there are more fools because their voices are louder than the kind folks who say nice things quitely...

Hi Holly.
So sorry you've been feeling bad about all this stuff. In my opinion, there are no better o worse blogs. For example, I love your haus maus blog, and I like decor8 but not as far as I like haus maus. Why? Because haus maus is more personal, is more human, and I can get identified with you. I like personal blogs, I like non-perfectly-studied-blogs, I like spontaneity. I don't think I can have an objective opinion to state what is the best blog in the world.
So don't worry more about all this, and please don't close decor8 and never ever close haus maus. Please. Without you, I wouldn't know how beautiful a 1950's green lamp can look in a living-room.
Congratulations for your work.

Most of the blogs I read are design blogs or house blogs but i love that it isn't all house and home. I want my design bloggers to be real people and real people have things happen in their life. They have puppies like Anna and it just wouldn't have meant the same thing when she mentioned getting a new sofa if we didn't know who Fritz was. Your life around you affects how you feel, what you want to write about and um, well a number of the blogs nominated like haus maus, D16, and Making it Lovely are personal blogs first that happen to focus on design in the home.

I think the AT contest was a learning experience for everyone involved (including AT writers). Frankly, some commenters on AT can't be real people because really, who changes their pillow cases every single day. (did you read that post? crazy people who must do a lot of laundry).

I enjoy your blog and also really am inspired by it (and other design blogs). I am so thankful for the free content and know that some bloggers are able to make a living doing it - or at least some income. But that doesn't make it OK to bash or be negative. I would wish for bloggers to simply delete bashing comments or close threads that get mean. I have left several groups (especially Forums) that were initially so helpful but suddenly turned into meanfests. There just isn't any reason for that. Disagreement is totally fine and great - but meanness just isn't. Keep up the good work as long as it is fun and building into you as well.

Without design blogs I would not know what my design style is. They have inspired me, made my happy, made me sad, but more than anything filled me with joy. I really discovered design through the very blogs you are talking about. It's my daily therapy and one I hope never goes away.
I read 1,000+ blogs a day and for the most part, the posts and the associated comments are overwhelmingly positive. Then there is AT.

There is just something about that blog that attracts drama in the comments. I read each and every post and I avoid reading the comments if I can help it. It hurts to see someone who bravely posted a home tour be ripped apart in the comments. After the Homies, I know of many online friends who are no longer reading that site because of the direction the comments have taken. It's sad, because it is a fantastic site with so much value. I still love AT but I'm hoping in the new year that more people will resolve to only positing positive or constructive comments.

Holly,

I've been reading your blog for about a year now, and I have to say that I think you're one of the most positive, inspiring people I've ever "met." Before I started reading this blog, and some others like it, I never thought of myself as a creative person. I can't draw, paint, or do any traditional crafts. But do I love putting my house together and experimenting with color and furniture.

In a way, this blog has been life-changing for me. I have lately been wondering if eliminating the more "negative" literature I love to read from my life would help me be a more positive and optimistic person. I've long been a proud realist, but reading your blog has shown me that optimism can be a blessing, not annoying sugary platitudes.

Please, please don't let the negativity bring you down. For some of us, your blog offers inspiration beyond the craft.

Personally without design blogs my new house would be horribly drab!! Dear Holly,

I like your blogs and I like you!

Honestly I don't think it necessary to take it personal or feel too sad about it.:)

Just as you say, the blogs' contents are all up to their own authors, and the readers just get them free, so there shouldn't be nasty things said about the various contents. As a blogger myself, I totally agree with you.

But as a blog reader at the same time, I can understand how important it is to focus on the blogs that have a focus and I can choose to read those limited blogs(maybe 5 to 20) that are of the most contents to my love, other than reading all the 250 blogs that I've subscribed to, if I don't have so much time surfing on the net in my daily life!

So, maybe we can look at it in a balanced way: let people have their different views of blogging, and WE blog as authentic as we like, to the point that we are totally honest and comfortable with ourselves and our readers!

Love you & cheers!:))
Holly,
Unfortunately, I think the mean spirited comments tainted the whole concept and true spirit behind the contest and that's a shame really.
Regardless of the negativity that others brought to the table it is still an honour to receive recognition and be a finalist among all the talent out there.
Congrats on that.
Contests and competitions are suppose to be a place to highlight our talent and compete on friendly ground in good spirit. Some people just choose to throw stones. Sad.
Any negative comment/personal attack at the expense of someone else is hurtful and inappropriate, celebrity or not.
I do believe you are genuine and friendly and I like that about visiting here. Thanks for staying true to who you are. I believe that's always the best path.

Hi Holly

I'm hesitating whether I should share my thoughts with you when others have already express almost the same I have to say. I didn't vote at AT, but I'm going verbal now.

I love your work. I started reading you thanks to the AT mention back in 2006, and went on an on. I read everything you write, it was me who wrote a neverending comment on the budget updating post you published in Real Simple a few days ago. I have all your blogs in my google.reader subscriptions, so I don't miss anything. I wrote you one or two emails a year ago and was delighted to have your reply. A beautiful reply from a beautiful person. Well, it sounds like I'm obsessed or something, but I just like what you do. It does change my day to see something new from you.

I'm very sorry you got hurt by mean comments. I've seen this again and again, when a blog becomes popular there come the vultures to tear it down. I would very sorry if you stop blogging because you don't want to expose yourself to that again, but I would understand it.

Just think that some people like me are very thankful for your commitment to quality, honesty and beauty in the small things of everyday life.

Thank you, Holly. May 2009 be a shining year in spite of this bitter swallow.

I could not believe what a train wreck that contest turned out to be! I wound up not voting because of all the negative drama attached to it. I was completely floored by the statements regarding that several of the blogs were too personal, containing to much about the author and not enough about design...I'm inspired daily by many blogs, for free, as you mentioned...Decor8 was the first place my art was mentioned on the web (and months later, I still have people say they found my shop through you)...I gets tons of enjoyment out of reading material someone else has spent many hours working on, so I sure hope they write about whatever they want to...be it their pregnancy or dogs or haircut or husband...

Thanks for opening up the discussion Holly. I'm glad to see some positive comments here, it really balances out the negativity we saw elsewhere.

If it weren't for blogs like yours most of us would stil be living in the same boring spaces as their parents - but instead I feel pride in my home and its uniqueness. I owe it to people like you who open my eyes to what's out there - without you I would not have my Etsy addiction! I appreciate bloggers for opening my eyes to whats out there and giving me goals to dream of (a new kitchen one day...).
Just the fact that this contest got so nasty - i had read on another contestants blog that they had asked to be removed from the contest for this face - i was shocked.
Thanks for not giving up on your blogs - without them I would be lost and uninspired.

I liked the contest, because it introduced me to many new blogs that I hadn't known before. Btw I voted for you. I think you should have totally won.
But what went on in the commenting was way off. I don't understand what motivates people to be so hateful towards others. I have experienced similar comments on my scrapbooking blog, where some anonymous commentators were actually trying to tell me what to post about on my blog. After being angry at first, I decided to not let it get to me so much. On good days I feel sorry for those commentators and believe they are very lonely people who have no one to talk to in the world and are angry about it, so they let it out on me. On bad days I see them as bigot and just plain stupid.
I for one am always looking forward to new posts from you, and whatever you want to post about is fine with me. You rock!

Hi Holly,
I didn't know about this until just now. Last week when you said someplace (flickr or Decor8) that you were having a bad day, I didn't know why, but now I certainly do.

It's unfortunate that there is a desire to rate endeavors, especially creative ones. And that there needs to be a winner. I think everyone who is truly out there creating, either with their words, images, or any form of art is already winning because they've found there place. Those that want to then tear them down are the real losers because they are wasting their energy and putting negativity into the world.

I could go on and on about how when we disrespect others we are only reflecting poorly on ourselves. The words that come out of our mouths or off our keyboards probably won't affect another person's opinion of our target, but they certainly will affect their opinion of us.

Sorry that this ordeal caused you distress. You create a really nice world for us on blogland. It's safe and supportive and kind. Please keep it up. =)

Lot's of love! ~Shanon

I think that this is a bit like an art critique. Something either speaks to you or it doesn't, but there is no point in criticizing since it is such a personal thing to the creator. I doubt that someone would change something as personal as a blog just because some people didn't like it, so what is the point of the negative criticisms?
Anonymous said…
wow, I had no idea about the negative comments...I just didn't read them. I think people just don't think, and my guess is that they really don't actually read your blog or many of the others that were nominated. Which is a good think really because who wants to hang with that....I personally believe it is very hard to be negative and awful when you surround yourself with positive and supportive.
Being a sorta new blogger, I am finding that it is somewhat life changing...in my pre-blogging days, I would (and still do on occasion) feel free to be quite negative, let my self go on a rant every once in a while... but it is a practice thing...now, I have this daily dose of nothing but positive - 'following the mantra, if you can't say something nice then don't say it at all'-...and I am finding that it seeping into my non-blogging life... Everyday that I might feel ugly or irritated, I improve my own outlook by sitting down and writing something nice about someone else.
I am a true believer in reaping what you sow and that your own positive energy will come back to you ...just look at the 80+ comments here.
Thanks for writing decor8...I think it is great. -
oh and to answer your orginal question...I discovered a handful of great blogs through the AT contest and for that reason, I think contests are ok, and avoiding them is kinda like saying you are never going to travel again because of a terroist attack...justifiable and understandable, but ultimately lets the wrong people win.

I think of Apartment Therapy as a great source of inspiration and information but (and it's a big BUT) I think it's kind of scary too. At one point, I thought about putting up some rooms in my house on the site to get some advice, and then I saw how the commenters shredded people's taste and decided not too. At the end of the day, I would much rather ask my friends and know that they mean well when they give me advice.

I wholeheartedly agree with your stance on negativity. My resolution for this year is to be mindful that: It is far easier to destroy than to create.

I came to this view both by looking around my hometown of London and seeing vandalism, and also by hearing people criticise others art and work. Now when I'm about to blurt out a negative or cruel comment about anothers' work, I pause to consider what motivated them to create and what care they have taken.
I'm far from attaining sainthood but the simple awareness that "It is far easier to destroy than to create" has made me happier.

I'm a bit late commenting on this, and I have to admit that I missed the whole 'Homies' controversy as it happened, but I thought I'd still give you my two cents.

I don't like blog contests. Don't like 'em. Having seen several different blog 'genres' grow from the ground up, I feel like web communities are for inspiring and supporting one another, and it's just impossible to do that when I contest is added to the mix. Somebody's feelings will always be hurt, even if they're not invested in winning; it plants that seed of 'so-and-so is better than me'. It's one thing to think it to yourself -- modesty and all that -- it's another to be told by a group of your peers.

I'd much rather see a website run features on the blogs they want to support -- which many do -- than use a contest to drum up new visitors and introduce new blogs to a wider audience. I just don't see how they're useful. Pah.

That's awful! I'm sorry to hear stories like that one, I mean, we are supposed to be here for fun and entertainment, not insults and negative stuff.

Don't let that get to you, you are a truly inspiration, I wish I could write like you someday, plus, you are one of the most respected and visited bloggers :)

I'm kind of relieved I didn't see the competition nor the comments - I find AT full of so many spiteful people who just want to tear others down. There is no sense of community, just one-upmanship, and that's precisely why I love blogs like yours, Creature Comforts, Bliss etc. I don't need to be around negative people on my time out searching the blogworld for goodies, I get enough of that in my day to day life.

But next time I have my cranky pants on, I might head over to AT and tell a few "anonymous" people exactly what I think of their snide little remarks, just to even out the playing field a little. :)

Holly, You have the best blog(s) ever! I'm really very inspired every time I visit one of them.
Although I'm really sorry you felt discouraged by negative comments some bloggers were given during the AT contest, I really don't understand what the fuss is about. There are so many people loving these great design blogs that were featured in the contest. Of course there will be (a very small minority of) people that don't like certain blogs, why are they not aloud to voice their opinions how rude, weird or unthoughtful these might be? Why are you offended? I hear people saying things I find silly all the time. Then I think " Ok, I don't agree." or "That is a pretty strange unkind thing to say." I don't pick the shitty critisism up and rub them in my face. The opinion has nothing to do with you it belongs to someone else.
Also to think no one can say anything that is not a compliment anymore makes me a little nausious.
I't is ok if you don't agree with me on this. I will not be offended ;-) I hope you don't hate me for saying this.
Please keep making great posts! You open the world to so much beauty. Thank you for everything.

noorieke - thank you for stopping by. I don't know who you are (do you have a link?) but thanks for your thoughts!
I welcome constructive criticism but it's the hateful comments that ruin all the fun and create problems. It's so important to be yourself when you comment, say how you feel, etc but with tact. No one LISTENS to people who are rude, ugly, hateful. In fact, I block it out and consider it useless.

I absolutely hate seeing negative comments on the internet, I think it is so mean and degrading and unnecessary. People forget that behind every blog is a person who is pouring their heart and soul into what they do!
