{kitchen: post renovation}

the below photos are of the brand spankin' new kitchen, at least how it looks currently, my mother-in-law took these and it seems as though she stood in the kitchen so it looks like a closet instead of a kitchen space. it's small but not this small! the kitchen can fit a wall of cabinetry on the left, appliances on the right wall, and in front of the window i picture a small table with 2 chairs and a pendant in the center of the room.
{current}
as you can see, the closet in the corner was removed, a heated added to the space beneath the window, and the water heater and obnoxious pipe was replaced and moved to the wall directly to the right of the door. only thing is, i have to think of what exactly to put beneath the water heater. this annoys be about german apartments, things like this are hidden in most american apartments. designing around this thing should be fun. i need to learn to embrace the water heater i guess. maybe put fun magnets and pictures all over it (is that safe?). I once saw the water boiler hidden by a wooden sort of paravent and coated with chalkboard paint. So you could use it as a noticeboard. or you paint even the magnet paint underneath and you can use it as noticeboard to scribble with chalk on AND put notes on with a magnet - how about that.
And: go and find living & more. You will love the mag (think you know it already!)
Hugs,
Yvonne

oh yes living & more is such a nice magazine but we can't get any german magazines over here, at least in new england. :( i'll have to wait until august.

You could hang a cute curtain in front of it, one that would go down to the floor. This would bring in some color and pattern. Add some open shelving underneath it for more storage.

Or I'd think about an all white cabinet/storage next to it, so it blends in.

Hi Holly,

Love decor8 and your new blog! I wonder if you could get an armoire or something like that and cut out part of the back so that it fits around the water heater. That way the heater is hidden and you would have extra storage. Plus you could paint or decorate the armoire as you wish.

Gosh this is so giving me ideas about the left wall in our new kitchen, sounds like your placement of appliances on the right wall with fridge on the left is the same intended layout as ours.

My fiancé is a computer games designer but loves turning his hand to all sorts of things. So when we thrashed out some ideas for more counter space he designed a very slim unit (sort of based on a skinny IKEA expedit bookcase shape) with press catch handleless doors and open cubby holes at the top. Very modern looking which we plan to have a carpenter build and then paint to match the kitchen cabinetry. The best bit was that the doors at waist height don't open but hinge downward in one piece to form a counter which you can open and close as needed if you are preparing food or want an extra counter to sit at for coffee. I need to get a drawing!

You must be very excited Holly, designing a whole house from scratch is fun!

Hi, I have just written a new post in my blog and I remembered your kitchen. I found this wonderful thing at smeg: washer and sink, all in one, and I think it could fit perfect under your water heater, and it's so beautiful!! it's available in more colors and it would help you to manage the lack of space. Take a look!

How bout if you put a cabinet around it? I'd be tempted to just build a ceiling to floor "pantry" around it and the pipe and try to utilize some storage under it. It would then be hidden away.

Hi ladies, thanks for your feedback, so helpful!

Margaret - It's a water heater with a flame inside, my husband said you cannot surround it with anything, you're not allowed... But that is a great suggestion. I don't mind it showing though, it's more of what to do with that corner to make it a bit functional. Perhaps a built in beneath it. I really need to get into the space to measure it.
