{kilda in berlin}

a new haus maus reader named ale told me about kilda in berlin. i think i saw this site before, linda at volksfaden may have told me about it last year... anyway, they have lots of scandinavian things for the home, including furniture, so i'm in heaven because it's not far from hannover. look at their offerings. so pretty. i don't want my apartment to be red, blue, and white or overly countryish but i do love the look of this shop and i'm confident that i can find some nice things at kilda. we took the high speed train from hannover to berlin in the past and the ride was amazingly smooth and relaxing and took only 1 hr and 20 minutes. berlin is a fantastic (and huge) city, hundreds of museums and beautiful stores like galeries lafayette and kadewe. i had my ipod and sat there listening to keane, morrissey, blonde redhead, and corinne bailey rae. i read an entire issue of selvedge magazine. the train was very comfy and felt like a plane only with 4x the leg room. what do you think about this country design? it's a little too sweet for me, but some of it will really work, especially the white bench that looks like a pew. i want one for my dining table with a secret compartment inside for storing my sewing stuff since i plan to also use the table for sewing/crafts. {images from kilda}

And I love benches inside - so romantic!

I too find things here are either super-sweet country/rustic, or glaringly modern. However, I think a few things from this shop would be fun. But I have always liked the idea of of throwing the two together - Metropolitan Home-esque.

This is why I'm so curious to see how your home, Holly, will turn out. You keep saying you can't decide between Bohemian and Modern, but based on your Decor8 posts, I'm confident you'll amaze us all with the end result! So fun to read along your journey!

Oooh kilda is so me. I don't think it screams "country" and I love the fresh colors.

Oooh, polka dots! (My current obsession.) Will have to check out that shop asap. I'm surprised I never heard about it or saw it before. There's lots of lovely shops like that in Prenzlauerberg though (especially close to Kollwitz- and Helmholmplatz). You should have a look next time! Plus, on the more mainstream side, there's a Butlers and Dom at Hackescher Markt, which always pack some nice suprises. And Muji just opened up next door!

hi ladies! :)
thank you (an)drea for the muji lead. i've added it to my links in the right column. what is butlers and dom? i tried to google it but didn't come up with anything...

aaahhh, butlers is fantastic! they have a lovely, colorful line of basic housewares, plus they always come up with the cutest seasonal items. i'm especially a big fan of their wrapping paper. and everything else really!

and dom. well it's a bit intense and tacky, actually! you can spot its sparkling facade from kilometers away and hear the oonce oonce techno beat from down the block. it's the place to go if you're looking for anything neo-gothic, all gold/silver/black/white, or with a flocked pattern or animal prints. like during the holidays, it's where you'd be able to find a mini pink metallic Christmas tree. definitely over-the-top. but there's some diamonds in the rough to be discovered (that is, if you can withstanding the visual and auditory onslaught long enough to find them!).

Hi Holly,
Just a thought for you (as I'm obsessed with my iPod too) but why don't you try some German music? When I was in Germany last summer, I absolutely fell in love with Wir Sind Helden (very fun!), Juli (I could understand some of the words!), and my latest (thanks to iTunes) is Klee.

Drop me a line if you come across any bands that are good, and I'd be willing to swap you my suggestions (because I'll always have more)!

Tschüss!
-Kaisa
