Loot From America

It's funny right, but when I left Boston last year I never imagined that I'd miss anything. I don't know, going from America to Europe isn't a hardship as there are so many great stores and things here that it's impossible to really want for anything. And most of the shops in the states that I frequent all carry products from Europe anyway so what's to miss? But then the awesome Becky sent me a care package today with some loot from Target from their Liberty of London collection and I felt a bit more excitement than I had imagined feeling opening a package of loot from America. It felt exotic. Ha! Exotic. Imagine. But now that America seems so far away to me getting things from the states is kind of exciting. It's strange, it's the feeling I once had when friends sent me stuff from Europe.

Thanks, Becky!

But I still don't miss much which has taught me a lot about myself. I don't think moving is as much about learning to live in a new culture as it is about learning more about yourself. Much of what I've experienced has taught me more about how I think than how Germans think. I'm learning what matters, really matters... which is fascinating to me because I guess I expected to come over here and lose track of myself for awhile because I'd be immersed in this new, exciting life.

Love this notebook

But it's just the opposite -- I'm learning more about myself from total immersion, and while I'm still learning about local customs and culture, it all feels like one big learning experience more on the inside -- in my own head and heart -- than what I'm learning through observation of what is around me here. And so being an expat, living here abroad, is truly a life changing experience that I actually wish everyone could experience, if only for a few years once in their life. I cannot even begin to tell you how much you will grow as a person and what you find out about yourself... and I came over here thinking I knew myself so thoroughly. Yes, in my element I did. But in another environment entirely you are not in your comfort zone and are forced to deal with things you'd never encountered before and your reactions to them can be somewhat surprising in both positive and negative ways.

Loot from the states :)

So yes, the loot from America was a joy to open. Thank you Becky! But aside from Target, I'm not missing much at all from home. Of course, I miss my family but I'm referring to things and places, not people. In fact, if Germany had a Target I may never need to leave Europe. :)

It's the life experiences that are really important aren't they? Aside from family, the rest is just things. You can always find new, better, pretty, things anywhere you go.

Frau Becker... ha! I love Becky.

Holly! Are the Charley Harper cards from Target, too? I'm confused! I LOVE, love LOVE Charley Harper!
I studied abroad in Germany for a year, and I was so excited when I got a care package containing several cans of chipotle peppers. Crazy, I know!

Anyway, your care package looks like lots of fun!

You're welcome :) I filled a cart with this stuff - it's all so cute! So much for my new year's resolution not to bring more STUFF into my house!

what is realy missing in Germany are nice greeting cards, like they are distributed in the US or the UK in huge shops. Your loot looks helpful :-)
look at all that goodness! i love it!

I've been nodding my head when reading this. I spent some time in Paris, not as a tourist but actually living and working there and it does make a difference. You're right , Holly, that is something worth experiencing (although it hurt at times)

AFter living abroad for the past four years (Brazil & India) I agree it is an amazing experience that I wish everyone could have. It does change you for the better.

That being said - I still miss Target!

Getting out of your comfort zone can really teach you a lot about yourself.I think having an open mind and positive attitude (like you obviously do!) makes the transition easier. Getting nice care packages can also help. Wish we had a target in Canada!

I think it is not at all uncommon to miss family and friends and Target. That seems to be a pretty normal sentiment among us expat women! (I would add Chick-Fil-A to the list, but what do I know). ;p

I am in love with the Liberty of London line! Let me know if there is anything else you would like and I will see if I can find it... coming from one expat to another... I know those packages are like pure gold! Hugs!

Just a little silly thing- when we first moved here, coming on 6 years ago, I thought I would quite miss my american TV shows. What would I do without endless Law & Order re-runs?! :-) But you know what, I really don't miss them at all and have adapted. Now we watch Tatort every sunday night with the subtitles on (it helps me to be able to read the german as well as hear it.) I usually catch about 80-90% of the storyline.... Anyway the point it, you adapt and embrace! :-) Laura in Ludiwgsburg

I went to Munich last weekend to visit some second hand shops and ran into a store called Butler or Butler's....I'd swear you were in target or pottery barn....in the gray area of those two. Great style/functionality/prices.

Lissette a.k.a. dirndl and miracle bra wearing american...did I mention my hair is in braids....LOL! funny ha ha.
