{decisions, decisions}

i'm still deciding on colors and patterns, this part has me a bit intimidated at the moment. now i am on the other side of the table, the 'client' side, so i realize how a client must feel when i tell them about designing their space and color selection and they sort of freeze and then nearly faint when i show them that their gray/beige palace will soon be lime, teal, and white with teak and bamboo. then of course, once they've adjusted to the whole thing they are happy and such. i'm expecting that once i select the colors and get things ordered, i will be happier too. but for now i'm a bit glazed over from it all because i can use any color palette that i want. i love color and have so many ideas in mind, too many. narrowing it down and deciding is the hardest thing for me currently! my husband has handed over full creative lead on this project and though i appreciate it, i'm a bit 'deer in the headlights' all of a sudden. he'll help me install things but the selecting comes from me. i've never started from scratch before in my own space. even when i left home to live on my own, i brought lots of furniture and 'stuff' with me. now i'm starting from scatch. my helpful readers over at real simple (link) and on decor8 (link) gave me some amazing tips. it's sometimes hard for me to ask for help, everyone assumes i know already and the snarky ones think i should know because i decorate and write about design for a living and went to school for this. fact is, it's not that i don't know what i like, but it's more the color part and the 'where to start' part that is keeping me up at night. i guess i missed the class on coping with design add. :) i think i've been exposed to so much online that i've lost focus so it's time to get back in touch with holly. some things in life are different when you have to apply your knowledge to your OWN life and not to someone else's, right? i'm going to start uploading random mood boards. yes. that's a good start. one foot in front of the other. left. right. left. right.

i hear you - this was so me last year! just don't do what we did: paint the walls before your furniture/wall art arrives! It's so hard to decorate backwards! It's so much easier to paint the wall a color that perfectly complements a painting you love and want to hang, than to look at that same painting hanging on a wall that's a little 'off'.

but you're a pro and probably knew that tip back in Decor 101 ! ;)

I'm in totally the same situation, having just moved into a house, we've totally gutted the living room and now have a blank canvas to start on. Like you, my boyfriend has left it all up to me, being a graphic designer, it should be easy right? I'm struggling a lot. Have decided to start with a teal vase that i love, and working round that? My mind is slowing getting sorted!
Good luck

Dear Holly,

it's so much fun, and encouragement, and inspiration, and support to hear that also other people from the field have the same funny! problems...
I'm an interior designer who has started her own studio recently and had real problems about 'designing' the space!
My husband even suggested to hire a professional to do it...
I agree with you that a little overdose of perfectionism and such thorough knowledge of the market and the choices you have, really make our task a little more difficult but I am sure that is the most enjoying and rewarding project we can all have...our own dream space that must fit in real world....
keep up your trully inspiring blogs...I have decor8 as homepage

xxxs Marianthi

p.s. in Greece we say sth like 'the hairdresser canot cut his own hair'...just think about it
